A tree was downed by the non-thunderstorm winds from the remnants of Ian on Everett Road. A billboard was also blown down on the Lynchburg Salem Turnpike near Bedford, VA. An estimated 2,659 residents lost power.

Episodes
Winds increased after the passage of a cold front. These strong winds down trees and tree limbs in the region of Franklin, Henry, Bedford, and Pittsylvania Counties. Also, there were a couple of reports of winds also downing power poles and removing some shingles.
A few thunderstorms reached severe thresholds around the Piedmont. These storms knocked down trees and powerlines, causing over 10,000 customers to lose power. In one case in Bedford county, quarter sized hail was also observed.
Low pressure moved off the New England coast and intensified. High pressure was building into the region. the resultant pressure gradient produced damaging wind gusts that brought trees at at least one power line down.
Severe thunderstorms on the afternoon and evening of May 21st from the Roanoke Valley south to Southside Virginia produced hail up to the size of golf balls and destructive winds that toppled trees and power and telephone lines.
Thunderstorm winds during the late evening hours on the 9th produced hail up to quarter size and damaging winds. Up to quarter size hail and wind gusts estimated to 70 mph knocked down trees, broke or damaged siding, damaged window frames, and damaged vehicles in Forest. The hail also accumulated to a depth of 2 inches in Forest. Hail up to quarter size broke security lights 1 mile south of Lynchburg City.Strong winds knocked down trees and power lines in Covington and Halifax, and knocked down trees in Lick Run, Buchanan, Fincastle, Montvale and 3 miles east of Bedford City.
