However, impacts were felt throughout the week due to power loss, school closings, tree and power line damage, etc.. The greatest accretion of Ice stretched from Liberal and Ashland, north through Dodge City, Jetmore, Greensburg and Larned. Water equivalent was 2 to as much as 4 1/2 inches.||Dollar amount of damage was still not know as of the end of March, 2017. But, early estimates were well over $15 million done to power poles, power lines, tree damage and removal, and damage to structures from falling tree limbs. Some areas were without electricity for a week.

A potent winter storm moved into western Kansas during the early morning of Tuesday, February 5th and then marched eastward through central Kansas during the day Tuesday. As the upper low tracked west to east through Kansas, a surface low pressure system moved slowly east along the Kansas-Oklahoma border. This combination resulted in moderate to heavy snow in parts of western and central Kansas. Before the snow ended, from 6 to 8 inches fell in a 30 to 40 mile-wide swath from Hays to Kalvesta (in Finney County). An area of 4 to 6 inches of snow fell south of this heavier band, and was basically north of a line from Johnson to Jetmore to east of La Crosse in Rush County. One to two inches of snow fell to the south of this mentioned area, with a few patches of 3-plus inches of snow. This 1 to 2-inch band was north of a line from Elkhart to Dodge City to Greensburg to south of St. John. Considerable blowing and drifting of snow was reported, as north winds blew at 20 to 30 mph during the moderate to heavy snow. In Gray County just west of Cimarron during the mid-morning of Tuesday, freezing drizzle and fog formed a nearly solid sheet of ice along US Highway 50 along a curve and a hill. Blowing snow worsened the visibility in that area, and numerous accidents occurred. Several cars slid off the road, and 2 power poles were downed. However, no injuries were reported.

A widespread devastating storm produced total precipitation from 2 to 4+ over much of Southwest Kansas. There was even an area from Garden City to Dighton that had up to six inches of rain and freezing rain! Significant, widespread damage to trees and especially utility lines, poles, and towers resulted from the 1/2 to 2 1/2 of ice accumulation. In an area from Sublette to Garden City, north through Dighton had the most severe damage. Over 60 thousand people were without electricity at one time or another from the nearly 10 thousand of power poles that were taken down from the weight of the ice. Some of these structures were high transmission towers. Tree damage was extreme! It took over a month to clean up just tree damage.|There were still people without electric service a month after th event. Crews with heavy equipment couldn't install power poles because of the deep mud on county roads. In addition, service from the poles to the home meters is not possible yet because of local damage on homes.|At the Dodge City airport, 3.21 of precipitation (rain, freezing rain and snow) fell from the storm. The only other time Dodge City, KS recorded over 3 of liquid equivalent precipitation in a single December storm was December 19-22, 1877 when 4.31 was measured. But there was even greater amounts! Up to six inches of rain and freezing rain fell in the Dighton area! The resulting ice was tremendous with several 300 foot communication towers toppled.|Snowfall of 12 to 18 inches was widespread in the far west with as much as 32 inches reported west of Johnson in Stanton county.

A major winter storm swept across southwestern and south central Kansas with a vengeance from early Tuesday, January 4th and through late Wednesday, January 5th. This storm left a thick layer of ice over most all of the counties in DDC's CWA, followed by periods of sleet, and then a blanket of snow. Hardest hit were Barber, Comanche, Pawnee, Hodgeman, Rush, Finney, Haskell and Grant counties. Over 3/4ths of an inch of ice accumulated in the Medicine Lodge and Sublette areas Tuesday afternoon and evening, while up to 2 inches of sleet accumulated in the La Crosse area. Widespread tree limb damage, extended power outages, and numerous school closings were reported, as well as numerous accidents. There was at least one accident with injuries Tuesday morning, just west of Pratt, when a pickup truck carrying mail flipped over on icy conditions. Over 1100 persons were without power Tuesday night in the Pratt area. The power outages were so widespread, mainly from fallen limbs and downed power lines, that Aquilla power company set up an 800 number to report outages. Westar Energy reported over 51,000 customers across the state were without power at one point Wednesday. Nearly all of the area received an inch or two of snow Wednesday, January 5th, with the highest amount of 4 inches received from a cooperative observer 6 miles west-northwest of Schoenchen. The snow ended and the storm wound down during the afternoon of Wednesday, January 5th.
