Georgetown Power Outages Caused by Weather
Events
Scattered tree damage caused by high winds resulted in downed power lines and road closures.
Snowfall of 2 to 3 inches accumulated with blowing snow and strong wind gusts of 30-40 mph. Rapidly falling temperatures resulted in slick roads and significant travel impacts. Treacherous travel conditions were noted throughout December 23rd, a busy holiday travel day. Wind chills of -25 to -30 were observed on the morning of the 23rd. Extreme cold strained the power grid and rolling blackouts were implemented by utility companies.
A transformer was struck by lightning and caught on fire. Power lines were down across Lakeview Drive. Cost of damage is unknown.
The media reported that a tree was down on power lines at Brooks Lane and Cincinnati Road.
There were at least five large trees down in southern Scott County. The area also reported some power outages.
Episodes
In an environment with temperatures in the upper 80s to low 90s, dew points in the upper 60s to low 70s, and strong low level instability, a subtle surface trough was able to produce scattered storms across north-central Kentucky. This resulted in downed trees and power lines. Lightning started a fire on a power pole and there was one report of severe hail.
