The National Weather Service confirmed a macroburst (straight line wind damage) from Queensbury in Warren County to Kingsbury in Washington County. Confirmation was based on maps and pictures provided by Washington County Emergency Management, newspaper photos, storm damage reports from Warren County Emergency Management and trained spotter reports.||Winds from the macroburst brought down hundreds of trees, flattened a barn and threw its roof a quarter mile, and tore part of a roof off a building. Power outages, damage to homes from falling trees, and road closures were widespread in this area. The worst part of the damage swath passed just north of the Glens Falls New York State Mesonet observation site, which recorded a gust of 68 mph.

September 6, 2012

A weak surface cold front was approaching the region during the afternoon hours. Cool temperatures aloft, combined with this approaching front, allowed for a showers and thunderstorms to develop during the afternoon hours across the Adirondacks. One of these thunderstorms became severe, producing wind damage to trees and power lines. Showers and thunderstorms ended during the evening hours as the front moved south of the region.

July 17, 2012

An area of low pressure moved from southern Canada towards northern New England. This low pressure area pushed a cold front and surface trough across upstate New York during the afternoon and early evening hours. With very warm temperatures in place, the atmosphere was quite unstable. Several clusters of thunderstorms developed and organized into a line and moved southeast across the southern Adirondacks. Some of these thunderstorms produced wind damage to trees and power lines. Thunderstorms weakened by the late evening hours.

September 11, 2002

During the afternoon of September 11, a steep gradient developed between a cool Canadian high pressure area over the Great Lakes, and a double barreled low pressure area, including the circulation from Hurricane Gustaf, off the mid Atlantic Coast. This scenario resulted in a high wind event across portions of eastern New York. Strong northwesterly wind gusts were clocked as high as 67 mph by a weather spotter in the town of Catskill, Greene County. There were reports of some downed trees throughout eastern portions of that county. Trees were also reported blown down near Kingston, and other places in Ulster County. A large limb of a tree fell onto a large home in Hudson, Columbia County, producing minor damage to that structure. More trees were damaged throughout Columbia County. The town of Pine Plains in eastern Dutchess County was hard hit with several large trees and powerlines down. A large concentration of wind damage took place in southeastern Renselaer County where Route 20, near Nassau, was closed by many trees toppling onto power lines. A nearby local road was temporarily closed as well. Scattered downed trees and power lines were reported throughout Warren County. The wind temporarily knocked out power to about 1,500 customers in the Queensbury - Lake George Region, about 3,000 customers in the Greater Capital District, and up to 25,000 in the Catskill and Mid Hudson region of eastern New York.

March 21, 2001

Low pressure, from eastern Georgia, moved to eastern North Carolina by the morning of March 21. The storm then tracked off the Virginia coastline and up the eastern seaboard, to become the third nor'easter of the month. By the morning of March 23, the storm center had slowly progressed to the Gulf of Maine. Although not all that powerful, the storm had both Gulf and Atlantic moisture to work with. Heavy wet snow fell, accumulating 5 to 10 inches across the higher terrain of eastern New York, with most valley locations getting little or no slushy accumulation. This snow was heavy and wet enough to bring down limbs across the region. Wires and trees were reported down in Middelburgh, Schoharie county. Trees also fell across portions of Warren county. Specific snowfall amounts included 7 inches at Windham, Greene County, 10.5 inches at Indian Lake, Hamilton County, 8.7 inches at Summit, Schoharie County , 8.5 inches at Stillwater in Herkimer County and 7.6 inches in Warrensburg, Warren County. An estimated 1,500 homes over the higher terrain across eastern New York state, were without power. Service was disrupted to about 100 phone customers in Warren County.

February 14, 2000

A low pressure area developed over the Oklahoma panhandle early on Feburary 13. This storm tracked northeast, reaching the Ohio Valley early on Feburary 14, then across Pennsylvania and off the coast of Long Island by late in the day. The storm brought a potpourri of wintry weather to eastern New York, including snow, sleet, rain and freezing rain. A swath of 6 to 14 inches of snow fell across the Western Adirondacks, including 13 inches at Stillwater, and 7.5 inches at Indian Lake, both located in Herkimer county. Lesser amounts of snow fell across the remainder of the area. However, significant ice accumulated across the Saratoga-Lake George area. In this area, up to 3/4 of an inch of ice accretion was noted. The ice brought down some power lines near Scotia and Duanesburg in western Schenectady county. There were spotty power outages reported as well as some school and business closings.

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
