Power Outage in Goodland, KS

High wind gusts of 58 mph or greater were observed in Sherman County. The maximum wind gust of an estimated 70 mph was reported 13 miles north of Edson, KS. Blowing dust caused by the high winds reduced visibility down to near zero in some locations. Damage caused by the high winds included irrigation pipes blown onto Interstate 70 at mile marker 2, a power pole blown down 6 miles north of Goodland, KS on Highway 27 as well as up to 10 downed powerlines reported 3 miles north-northeast of Caruso, KS.

Report received of power lines down between Rd 13 and 14 on Road 59 due to a thunderstorm wind gust. A hog hut also blown 30 ft. and a T-post was bent by the wind gust. Time is radar estimated and wind speed is estimated based on damage indicators.

Non-thunderstorm wind gusts up to 54 mph were reported within Sherman County. The KGLD ASOS located 1 mile north-northeast of Goodland, KS recorded the maximum non-thunderstorm wind gust of 54 mph at its location. These winds caused blowing dust that lowered visibility down to between 2 miles in the area. Power outages were also reported 3 miles west of Goodland, KS due to these winds.

Two rounds of high winds occurred across Sherman County. Mesonet stations across the county recorded wind gusts of 58-81 mph, with the strongest recorded gust located in Goodland, Kansas. Numerous trees, power poles, and power lines were reported down across the county with power outages reported in Caruso and Goodland. In Goodland, high winds damaged stop signs, road signs, a wooden chest acting as a flower bed, a section of wooden fencing at two residences, and collapsed a metal mailbox inward towards the center while remaining on it's stand. The wind gusts capable of this degree of damage were estimated to be up to 100 mph.

Sherman County Dispatch reported a wildfire sparked by a combine in a ditch. Strong winds from the passing cold front helped spread the fire to the neighboring patch of farmland. A power pole and a small portion of a railroad track, along County Road 2700 E south of Highway 24 near the town of Ruleton, were also burned.

Sherman County Dispatch reported a downed powerline along County Road |23 near the intersection with County Road 68.

West to West-southwesterly winds up to 8 mph combined with cold temperatures as cold as 6 below produced wind chills as low as 19 degrees below zero across Sherman County. The coldest wind chills were observed near Goodland, Kansas. Impacts: power outages.

Wind gusts of over 60 MPH occurred across the county, with a peak gust being reported at the Goodland airport. The high winds also blew two semis into each other near mile marker 13 on I-70. A mile west of Goodland a power pole was leaning from the high winds.

The high winds partially pulled a power box off the side of a house, blew down several tree limbs of unknown size, a tree limb of 10 inches in diameter, and a tree 12 inches in diameter in Goodland.

Power lines from an unknown number of poles have been blown down. Pea size hail several inches deep is also covering the ground.

Numerous trees of eight inches or larger snapped off at the ground between Mile Marker 8 and the Colorado border. Four semis were blown over on I-70. The travel center on east bound I-70 is without power.

Wind gusts to 77 mph across Sherman County, peak reported at KGLD at 3:28 pm MST. Observations at ASOS in Goodland, mesonet in Ruleton, 8 miles northeast of Goodland. A few downed trees and powerlines reported by dispatch in Goodland.

White-out conditions were observed just north of Goodland. A peak wind gust of 60 MPH occurred at 525 AM MST. The blizzard conditions were mainly east of Highway 27. Snowfall totals were close to 20 inches along the east border of the county, with amounts declining to the west. During part of the blizzard Goodland lost power. A federal disaster was declared by President Donald J. Trump.

The high winds broke a wooden electrical pole and brought the power lines down near an auto parts store on Highway 24 and tore a sign down at a truck stop on Highway 27 on the south side of Goodland. A six to eight inch tree limb was also blown down in Goodland.

The thunderstorm winds blew down three to four inch diameter green tree limbs. Residence was also without power for roughly a day.

Six power poles down at Rd 12/Rd 70. Time of report and wind speed estimated from Doppler radar. This is the same general location as a previous report of a grain bin blown down. The downed power lines also started a grass/stubble fire.

Power pole was blown down in Kanorado during the afternoon, causing outages throughout the day. A seven car accident occurred at 1:20 pm MST 3 W of Ruleton due to the low visibilities.

At least two power poles were blown down on county Road 67. One started a fire and the other damaged a vehicle.

Several other mesonet sites across Sherman county reported peak wind gusts to 60 mph. In Goodland, an elm tree was blown onto a roof and an awning was torn from a residence. A utility pole was snapped, resulting in a minor power outage in town. A 40 foot ham radio antenna was also blown over.

Freezing rain accumulating to 0.10 inches resulted in scattered power outages in the city of Goodland. Transformer flashes observed from NWS office. Freezing rain mixed with heavy wet snow early in the morning and changed to all snow, accumulating to 4 inches by noon.

This tornado tracked from Sherman county through most of Cheyenne county with a total path length of 34 miles. The Sherman county path length was 7 miles. The tornado was on the ground for 62 minutes and produced F1-F2 damage along much of its path, especially in Cheyenne county. In Sherman county, no homes were affected. Tree and power pole damage was most noteworthy in the northern portion of the county near Roads 79 and 30 where 15 poles were snapped and extensive tree damage occurred. The tornado developed near Roads 73 and 30 and tracked straight north near Road 30 for most of its length in Sherman, and exited into Cheyenne county near Road 30.|

Strong gradient winds occurred much of the day with a few damage reports including a 10-inch diameter branch and power lines blown down in the afternoon. Two motorcycles were blown over on Interstate 70 at milepost 13 due to gusty winds, but no injuries were reported.

The winds knocked down powerlines and damaged a few trees.

On July 3rd, a warm front passed through the northwestern region of Kansas which allowed thunderstorms to develop. These thunderstorms produced damaging wind gusts up to an estimated 95 mph as well as hail up to peas in size. Not only did the thunderstorms knock out power due to the damaging winds in Sherman county, but lightning from a thunderstorm was reported to have struck a substation in Decatur County, knocking out power for a good portion of the county.

Throughout the day, a cold front gradually moved into Northwest Kansas. As the front crossed the Colorado border, strong winds spread a fire near the town of Ruleton damaging a railroad track, power pole, and a patch of farmland. During the early evening hours, a line of thunderstorms developed along the cold front as it moved east of U.S. Highway 83. The line of storms produced up to 70 mph wind gusts in Hill City and up to nickel sized hail across Gove, Sheridan, Decatur, and Graham counties.

A powerful winter system tracked across Northwest Kansas on March 19th, bringing with it high wind gusts over 60 mph in addition to light snow.

On August 3rd, 2018, a severe thunderstorm behind a cold front tracked east northeast into Cheyenne county, Kansas. Hail was reported ranging from dime to quarter size. The storm continued moving east-northeast. In east Cheyenne county, KS, a thunderstorm wind gust of 64 MPH was reported. |A second severe thunderstorm popped up south of Goodland, KS ahead of the cold front tracking northeast. In Goodland, hail ranging from a quarter to golf ball size was reported. A line of thunderstorms moving northeast built ahead and along the cold front. Measured thunderstorm wind gusts up to 90 MPH were reported. In Sharon Springs, KS, thunderstorm wind gusts were estimated at 100 MPH due to trees uprooted and large trees and power poles snapped. Damage to a covered patio and fence were also reported.

During the late afternoon and through the evening a group of thunderstorms moved in from the northwest behind a cold front. Storm activity increased in coverage as the storms moved southeast, transitioning from producing mainly hail in Eastern Colorado to straight-line winds and flash flooding. The straight-line winds blew down power lines in western Sherman County and blew down or damaged multiple trees at the travel center on I-70. Multiple trees were uprooted in Tribune from the straight-line winds as well. The largest hail size reported was quarter size south of Ruleton. This line of storms also produced torrential rainfall over the western part of Sherman County, causing some county roads to be closed.||Meanwhile to the west a second group of thunderstorms had formed behind the cold front. The strength of these storms was less, however thunderstorm winds caused major damage to a barn northwest of Norcatur.

During the afternoon and into the early evening a group of severe thunderstorms moved northeast across West Central Kansas. The largest hail size reported was golf ball north of Leoti near the county line. Winds from the thunderstorms broke three or four power poles northeast of Tribune. The very strong winds and dry ground conditions caused near zero visibility roughly 10 miles north of Marienthal. Flash flooding was reported near Tribune where a southwest to northeast corridor of up to three inches of rainfall, according to radar estimates, fell. A car was reported to be stalled in flood waters on one of the county roads in the corridor of heavy rainfall.

Several clusters of strong to severe storms developed during the afternoon and evening over Northwest Kansas, some of them remaining stationary at times. The largest hail size reported was quarter size near Blakeman, however over three inches of small hail was reported near Edson. The strongest wind gust reported was an estimated 70 MPH at Winona, which occurred when the town to lose power. A measured wind speed of 65 MPH was reported near Leoti ahead of a line of storms. Flash flooding occurred near Winona with these storms as water 18 inches deep and roughly 100 yards wide was reported over Road 230.

A powerful spring storm produced a wide variety of extreme weather, including severe thunderstorms across northwest Kansas, high wind with gusts to near 60 mph, and moderate to heavy snow with blizzard conditions. Several reports of marginally severe hail occurred with fast-moving thunderstorms during the morning hours across western Kansas.

An intense line of thunderstorms developed around midday in eastern Colorado and rolled east through the afternoon hours. The line of storms produced dozens of severe weather reports, including 3 tornadoes, flooding rainfall, and intense outflow winds of 70 to 90 mph. Minor damage to homes and significant tree and power line damage occurred, and numerous agricultural irrigation systems were overturned or damaged.

A strong storm system leaving the Rockies moved over Kansas and produced a period of very strong north winds over southwest Nebraska, northwest Kansas and eastern Colorado. Wind gusts of 45 to 60 mph were common in the area during the morning, resulting in minor damage. The Norton Dairy Queen received minor roof damage due to strong winds. A sign at the local animal shelter was damaged, which knocked a tree limb into power lines. This resulted in a loss of power to parts of Norton for several hours. A man lost control of his pickup truck on Interstate 70 in Sherman County due to strong wind gusts. He received minor injuries and was treated at the Goodland hospital.
