Power Outage in Graham, TX

Extreme cold gripped the county for several days. Overnight lows were near or below 15 degrees Fahrenheit almost all week. The period of February 15-16th was the coldest with low temperatures between 0 to -10 degrees Fahrenheit, and the maximum temperature on the 15th was only in the lower teens. Wind chill values during the 14th-16th were between 0 to -20 degrees Fahrenheit most of the time. The cold temperatures resulted in an extreme amount of damage to pipes, infrastructure, and power.

Law enforcement reported that power lines were down near the Young/Stephens County line.

The Graham Leader posted that thunderstorm winds uprooted trees, knocked down at least two structures, and damaged power lines.

The roof of a metal garage was blown off by thunderstorm winds in Graham. Power lines were also knocked down. The automated weather station at the airport (KRPH) measured a 47 mph wind gust at the time.

Rainfall totals over 6 over the weekend resulted in Lake Graham overflowing its banks and flooding the nearby land. Also, flooding along the Brazos River backed up into area creeks and streams resulting in widespread flooding around the county. A high water rescue of three teenagers was performed on April 18th around 4 pm CDT when rising flood waters pushed their car off Power Plant Road in Graham. Another vehicle nearly got stuck in this same area. Rising waters also flooded Graham Bible Church where several inches of water was found inside the building, and the water in the parking lot was almost waist deep. Fireman's Park in Graham was under water. Several major roadways were closed on the 18th due to high water: HWY 380 West at Elm Creek, HWY 61 near Spivey Hill, HWY 16 north at the Archer Co line, and HWY 578. All roads were re-opened by the morning of the 19th.

Numerous power poles and trees were blown down. Signs were also damaged. In Graham, a carport was blown onto power lines on Alford Street.

Strong winds gusting to between 50 and 60 MPH caused several incidents of wind damage. A huge cloud of dust overspread the county, causing visibilities to fall dramatically. Power lines were blown down, causing grassfires. A barn was also blown down.

A tree fell on a transformer knocking out power to about 20,000 people.
