Historic Red Barn, 115 years old and under renovation, collapsed. All three men pinned in the rubble were injured. One man required air med-evac to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita where, upon arrival, he was listed in critical condition. (By Friday Night, his condition had been upgraded to "fair".) A 2nd required ambulance transport to Via Christi Regional Medical Center in Wichita where he was listed in fair condition. The 3rd man did not seek medical attention. In addition, the following sustained significant damage: 12 homes, 4 businesses (including the Elko Building on west side of town that lost a 20 by 30 foot section of roofing on the west side of the structure causing the west wall to buckle inward), one shop, a camper that was blown over and rolled nearly 100 feet, and the roof of a carport that was dislodged and blown over the roof of the mobile home to which it had been attached. Obviously, damage to trees, power lines, and power poles was extensive. The latter two severed power to Harper for approximately 5 hours. August 23, 2003 - Thunderstorm Wind

Metal roofing torn from hangar at Harper County Airport. Private plane parked inside the hangar sustained minor damage. Unspecified number of power poles and power lines downed. However, power was severed to Harper's primary water well, which would be out of service until Monday afternoon (8/25). A second water well failed Sunday Night (8/24), with service also restored Monday afternoon (8/25). The Harper Advocate contributed greatly to this narrative.

Power Outage FAQs

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
