Episodes
Strong to locally damaging winds occurred ahead of a cold front. At the surface, low pressure was centered over northeast Illinois, with a cold front arching across the middle Mississippi Valley. East of the Marion to Mount Vernon corridor, strong south wind gusts from 50 to 60 mph were quite common due to the strong pressure gradient ahead of the front. In Hamilton County northeast of Mcleansboro, one fatality was blamed on high winds that brought a large power transmission pole down on a passing pickup truck. The 55-year-old driver was killed when the pole crushed the truck cab. Several other large power poles were down at that site. The highest measured non-convective wind gust was 48 mph at the Carmi airport in White County. A line of showers and isolated thunderstorms produced a couple convective gusts in Saline and Gallatin Counties that damaged a few trees and power lines.
Clusters of thunderstorms persisted well into the night ahead of a low-amplitude mid-level shortwave trough. These storms moved eastward through a corridor of very moist air, with precipitable water values approaching two inches. The convection was near and south of a surface front that extended from Iowa to southern Ohio. A few storms produced strong gusty winds that damaged trees and power lines.
A strengthening low pressure system tracked from the southern Plains northeast across the St. Louis, MO area during the night. South winds in advance of the low were strong and gusty. For a few hours, gusts reached 45 to around 50 mph. At Harrisburg in Saline County, a gust to 51 mph was measured by emergency management personnel. Nearby, minor roof damage to homes and utility buildings occurred in Eldorado. Trees were down on power lines and across roads. At the Mount Carmel Municipal Airport in the lower Wabash Valley, a wind gust of 54 mph was measured.
A line of thunderstorms intensified as it moved east across southern Illinois. East of Interstate 57, there were scattered reports of wind damage. All reports of wind damage consisted of trees and power lines blown down. At least one tree fell onto a house in Metropolis. Trees were blown down across Highway 145 in two places: about 8 miles south of Harrisburg in Saline County and between Eddyville and Delwood in Pope County.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?
- Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
