Strong thunderstorm winds snapped a power pole, which caused wires to fall onto the roadway.

A severe thunderstorm moved across Luzerne County between 930 and|1030 pm on Wednesday June 13 2018, producing an EF2 tornado in |Wilkes-Barre Township around 1000 pm. The tornado touched down |at Mundy Street and Highland Park Boulevard near the Wyoming |Valley Mall, then traveled across Interstate 81 and up into the woods|on Wilkes-Barre Mountain. Tornado damage continued on a broken |path through the State Game Lands before dissipating near |Llewelyn Corners and Interstate 476. Numerous roofs were destroyed and |windows blown out throughout the shopping center. Some structures |were sheared off near their foundation. Power poles were snapped |with numerous lines down. Several signs were destroyed, and |debris was scattered throughout the region. One piece of sign was |found approximately 7 miles from the mall area. A total of 23 business were damaged, with some suffering major damage. Maximum estimated winds were at 130 mph.

March 2, 2018 - Heavy Snow

Snowfall accumulated between 6 and 12 inches. High winds caused near blizzard conditions at times and scattered power outages.

October 29, 2012 - High Wind

High winds developed during the afternoon hours on Monday 29th and lasted into early morning hours on Tuesday the 30th from Hurricane Sandy. The high winds knocked downed numerous trees and power lines over the higher terrain areas of the county. Hardest hit areas were Hazelton, Back Mountain, Bear Creek and Penobscot Mountain where a gust was measured at 67 mph. Two schools, one in Hazelton and the other in Salem Township sustained roof damage. Peak sustained winds were estimated between 30 and 40 mph with peak wind gusts measure at 67 mph. The lower elevations including the Wilkes-Barre area had weaker winds and less impact from this storm. During the height of the storm late in the evening, there were an estimated 28,000 customers without power again, mainly over the higher terrain. It took a few days for power to be fully restored across the county.

A stationary boundary located south of the area sparked scattered showers and thunderstorms during the late afternoon of the 2nd. One of these storms caused tree and power line damage in the Silkworth area of Northeastern Pennsylvania.
