A transmission line issue affected two of Rocky Mountain Power's substations early Wednesday morning, leaving more than 19,000 customers in the dark. Crews had restored power to approximately 16,000 customers by approximately 5 a. m. , and by 6 a. m. , the lights were back on for nearly everyone. RMP spokesman David Eskelsen said the incident was first reported shortly after 3:30 a. m.

Rain changed over to snow quickly across the Wasatch Front Tuesday night, leading into a very busy overnight for power crews. As of 5:30 a. m. , Rocky Mountain Power was reporting just over 5,500 customers without power across the Beehive State. That number climbing from just over 3,000 customers at 5 a. m. RMP noted that they are aware of the situation and have crews working around the clock to get power restored as quickly as possible.

UPDATE (7:30 a. m. ) -- Several customers have had power restored as of 7:30 a. m. RMP's updated outage map shows approximately 2,600 people still without power. Several calls of power outages have been reported across Utah with the majority of customers without power centered in the North Salt Lake and Bountiful area. Rocky Mountain Power said over 6,300 customers are currently without power as of 6:30 a. m. Crews said they've reported several pole fires across the area.

The company did not report what caused the outage, though several viewers told 2News they heard what sounded like an explosion or loud popping before the outage began just after 4:30 a. m.
