Between one half of an inch and one inch of ice accumulated on surfaces across the county. Extensive tree damage that residents deemed comparable to the destruction of a tornado was reported across the county. Roads across the county were closed because entire trees, tree limbs, or power lines blocked the way. The entire town of Holton, and locations across Jackson County were left without power. Rural Jackson County residents werent likely to have power back for more than 3 weeks after the ice storm hit. Generators helped to keep local hospitals online. The day after the freezing rain ceased falling, 60% of the county was still without power. Emergency shelters were set up at more than 8 sites across the county. A Holton resident awoke to the sound of a tree limb crashing through the roof of her house early the morning of the 11th. A second tree limb crashed through the roof and landed in the kitchen of the home later that day. St. Marys and Rossville schools were closed 3 days, Emmett and Delia schools were closed for 4 days after the storm. What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
