Hutchinson Power Outages Caused by Weather
Events
Widespread non-thunderstorm winds wreaked havoc across the county. Sustained wind speeds routinely ranged between 40 to 50 mph with a peak gust of 84 mph. A tree was reported down in Arlington and in Nickerson. A semi was rolled over on Highway 50 one mile NNE of Partridge. In SW Hutchinson, tree branches were blown out and shingles were blown off of roofs. Two miles WNW of Hutchinson, power poles were blown down.||Non-thunderstorm wind gusts across the county.|Three miles E of Hutchinson - 84 mph.|Three miles W of Langdon - 66 mph.|Six miles WNW of Haven - 60 mph.
A report of damage to a mobile home awning and a couple of cars. Time is estimated from radar. The city of Haven was reported to be without power too.
Power poles were snapped and damage was reported to a deck near Cheney Lake.
Two full grown Chinese elm trees were blown over and a power pole was also blown over.
Numerous power lines were knocked down on the north side of Hutchinson, Kansas. This caused power outages on the north side of town. Hutchinson Airport recorded a measured gust of 51 mph.
Episodes
A compact but powerful upper level low pressure system moved out of the southern Rockies and into the Oklahoma Panhandle and Kansas during the morning hours of January 21st. This storm system brought significant snowfall to west central Kansas with amounts ranging from a dusting to seven inches. The snow lasted through much of the 21st into the early hours of the 22nd.
Strong winds again pummeled portions of north central KS on the 12th. Wind gusts up to 75 mph were recorded along with several power poles being blown down.
Late in the night of August 24th, a severe thunderstorm developed over Northeast Reno County. Hardest hit was Hutchinson, where destructive 70-80 mph winds caused multiple power outages and damaged a roof so severely that the facility had to be evacuated. No injuries were reported.
A series of small but compact supercell thunderstorms developed just north of Highway 54, across South Central Kansas near Kingman and Zenda, Kansas. One prolific supercell produced 70 to 100 mph wind damage and power outages along its path, from just north of Kingman, Kansas to Newton to Eureka, Kansas. A marina at El Dorado Lake, Kansas was hardest hit, damaging several boats and swamping a 40 foot houseboat.
From the afternoon until late in the evening of the 22nd, severe thunderstorms struck South-Central & Southeast Kansas. The severe thunderstorms were prolific wind producers. The most violent thunderstorms roared through South-Central Kansas, more specifically Kingman and Sumner Counties, with vicious winds that not only caused widespread tree, power line and power pole damage, but tore the roofs off a high school and elementary school in Argonia, located in extreme West-Central Sumner County.||Late that evening, another severe thunderstorm hit Russell County with hail as large as ping-pong balls.
