Recent Weather Related Causes of Power Outages in Ida County

Tornado. A tornado formed in an open field between 280th and 290th Streets near the Woodbury and Ida County line southwest of Battle Creek. The tornado tracked northeast for around one mile before it removed shingles from a house southwest of Battle Creek. As the tornado continued northeast, four additional farmsteads were impacted with|several outbuildings damaged or destroyed. Several trees were damaged and a few power poles were snapped north of Battle Creek. The tornado crossed U.S. Highway 59 just north of 190th Street, and lifted approximately 7 miles north of Ida Grove. The average path width was 50 yards and the maximum estimated wind speed was 100 mph. Property damage costs are a rough estimate.

Thunderstorm Wind. Several power lines and tree branches were reported down across the city.

June 16, 2021

Ice Storm. Freezing rain during the overnight and morning hours produced an ice accumulation of around a half inch on mainly elevated surfaces, including powerlines. Brief power outages were reported. Light snowfall in the afternoon accumulated to 1.2 inches 5 miles north northwest of Holstein.

November 09, 2020

Winter Weather. Hazardous travel conditions producing several minor accidents resulted from a period of light freezing rain which brought ice accumulations up to two tenths of an inch. Light snowfall followed with less than an inch accumulation. Several power outages were reported around the Sioux City metro area.

March 16, 2018

Ice Storm. Freezing rain of over a quarter inch caused icy roads, and accumulated on trees, power lines, and other surfaces. Holstein reported 0.41 inch of rain during a time when temperatures were at or below freezing. Law enforcement agencies reported a few vehicles accidents on the ice, but no known injuries, with traffic being light because of the holiday, business closings, and activity cancellations. Light winds limited damage to trees and power lines, with only small branches breaking off.
