Wind gusts downed trees and power lines throughout the county. Damage values are estimated.

February 18, 2021 - Winter Storm

Skywarn-trained weather spotters and members of the general public observed ice accumulations from freezing rain ranging from 0.15 to 0.3 inches in thickness across portions of Grayson County, including around the communities of Independence and Mouth-of-Wilson. The icing resulted in at least 1,033 known power outages within the county. Key impacts: power outages; hazardous travel conditions; tree damage; schools closed.

February 1, 2021 - Winter Storm

Snowfall accumulations of as much as 6 inches were observed at elevations above 3,500 feet across portions of Grayson County, including at the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. Key Impacts: transportation delays from both the winds and snowfall, traffic accidents and delays, localized power outages.

November 14, 2018 - Ice Storm

Ice accretion totals across the county ranged from 0.25 inches at multiple locations, including Troutdale, two miles southeast of Spring Valley, four miles north-northeast of Volney, and two miles northwest of Fries, to 0.50 inches at a location two miles west of Baywood. At least 1000 customers were without power.

October 20, 2018 - High Wind

Damaging wind gusts, estimated to be 45 mph to locally 60 mph, blew down several trees across the county. These strong winds also caused scattered power outages across the county, affecting over 5,600 customers.

April 9, 2016

A strong arctic cold front swept through the region the night of April 8th into the early morning hours of April 9th. Cold and windy conditions occurred after the passage of the front. Some of the wind gusts were in the neighborhood of 60 mph and brought down a power line.

The Sheriff's office in Grayson county reported that high winds downed numerous trees and created power outages across the county.

Heavy snow from the early afternoon of the 20th to the early morning of the 21st accumulated up to 12 inches in the higher elevations.The combination of heavy wet snow and strong winds downed power lines resulting scattered power outages.
