Power Outage in Independence, VA

Wind gusts downed trees and power lines throughout the county. Damage values are estimated.

Skywarn-trained weather spotters and members of the general public observed ice accumulations from freezing rain ranging from 0.15 to 0.3 inches in thickness across portions of Grayson County, including around the communities of Independence and Mouth-of-Wilson. The icing resulted in at least 1,033 known power outages within the county. Key impacts: power outages; hazardous travel conditions; tree damage; schools closed.

Snowfall accumulations of as much as 6 inches were observed at elevations above 3,500 feet across portions of Grayson County, including at the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. Key Impacts: transportation delays from both the winds and snowfall, traffic accidents and delays, localized power outages.

Ice accretion totals across the county ranged from 0.25 inches at multiple locations, including Troutdale, two miles southeast of Spring Valley, four miles north-northeast of Volney, and two miles northwest of Fries, to 0.50 inches at a location two miles west of Baywood. At least 1000 customers were without power.

Damaging wind gusts, estimated to be 45 mph to locally 60 mph, blew down several trees across the county. These strong winds also caused scattered power outages across the county, affecting over 5,600 customers.

Wind gusts estimated to be in the 30 to 40 mph range, with locally higher gusts, were common during the passage of Tropical Storm Michael. These gusty winds, when combined with the effects of saturated ground due to heavy rain from the storm, resulted in dozens of trees and power lines down across the county. As many as a dozen trees were observed blown down in the Baywood Community.

The Grayson County Sheriff's Office reported that several trees and power lines were down at varous locations throughout the county.

Multiple power lines and a power pole were knocked down in Elk Creek and trees reported down in several other locations.

Thunderstorm winds caused extensive damage across the City of Galax and neighboring section of Grayson County Virginia. Numerous trees were blown down. Specifically, the bulk of the damage was between the region of Pipers Gap road between Route 89 and Tower Road to the intersection of Glendale Road and Country Club Lane. The winds also snapped two power poles along Pipers Gap Road. Damage values are estimated.

A strong arctic cold front swept through the region the night of April 8th into the early morning hours of April 9th. Cold and windy conditions occurred after the passage of the front. Some of the wind gusts were in the neighborhood of 60 mph and brought down a power line.

Heavy snow from the early afternoon of the 20th to the early morning of the 21st accumulated up to 12 inches in the higher elevations.The combination of heavy wet snow and strong winds downed power lines resulting scattered power outages.
