Ithaca Power Outages Caused by Weather

Snow accumulated 3 to 11 inches. The heavy snow caused trees and powers lines to fall, resulting in approximately 4,750 customers without power.

A thunderstorm moved across the region and became severe. This thunderstorm produced severe winds and knocked over a tree which landed on power lines in the vicinity of 1350 Tioughanack Blvd.
High winds occurred across the region with gusts between 50 and 60 mph. Numerous trees were blown down and many customers were without power.
Episodes
Scattered showers and thunderstorms developed across portions of Central New York during the late afternoon of the 28th associated with a mid-level shortwave moving through. One of these storms became severe and produced minor tree and power line damage in the Virgil area of Cortland County. Three quarter inch diameter hail was also reported in the Dryden area of Tompkins County.
A mid level short wave moving over portions of Central New York sparked showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and early evening of the 16th. Some of these storms became severe and caused mainly tree and power line damage.
The remnants of Hurricane Ike moved northeast from the Ohio Valley through the eastern Great Lakes overnight from the 14th to the 15th. This storm brought high winds from the Finger Lakes to the eastern Lake Ontario region of north central New York. Peak wind gusts ranged from 50 to 60 mph. Damage occurred to trees and power lines, as many power outages were reported.
A cold front pushed south into the area and stalled, with high pressure over Canada pushing cold surface air south into upstate New York and northeast Pennsylvania. Meanwhile, a strong low pressure system moved northeast along the frontal boundary, and brought a mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow to the area. Several locations from the Finger Lakes region to the central southern tier of New York received one half inch of ice, bringing down trees and power lines.
Lightning caused damage to several substations and transformers knocking out power to 2400 customers.
