Deep cold air building across the region brought strong, gusty winds to the eastern end of Lake Erie. Winds gusted to between 50 and 60 mph across parts of Erie, Genesee and Chautauqua counties. The strong winds blew down a portion of a concrete block building wall in East Pembroke. No one was in the building at the time. The strong winds downed trees and power lines. There were several structures damaged by falling trees, for example on Roma Avenue in Buffalo. Power outages were reported by New York State Electric and Gas and National Grid in all three counties.
Thunderstorms developed during the evening hours in a warm, moist and unstable atmosphere. A few of these storms produced damaging winds that downed some trees and power lines. In Contantia, a tree fell on and damaged a house.
Thunderstorms that developed over Ohio drifted north across the southern tier. The thunderstorms produced damaging winds that downed trees and power lines in Jamestown, Great Valley, Olean and Portville. In Lakewood, a large tree fell on and damaged a house.
Behind a departing area of high pressure, a deep low pressure system moved from the Plains towards James Bay. A strong southeast downslope flow developed along the Lake Erie shoreline. Wind gusts were measured to 63 mph at Dunkirk. In Brant, Route 249 was closed by downed trees and power lines. In Sheridan and Silver Creek, a portion of Route 5 was also closed by downed power lines.
Deep low pressure moving from the upper Great Lake to Quebec pushed a secondary cold front across the region during the morning of the 29th. Strong southwest winds in the wake of the front brought down trees and power lines in parts of western New York. Wind gusts were measured to 61 mph at the waterfront in the City of Buffalo, 60 mph at Dunkirk airport, and 59 mph at the Buffalo Airport.
