Power Outage in Jesup, GA

Five trees were blown down along Highway 341 between Akin Road and Wire Road. Some trees fell on power lines.. The time of damage was based on radar.

A mesonet station in Jesup at the intersection of US Highway 341 and State Road 38 measured a wind gust of 64 mph. The county 911 reported numerous trees and power lines blown down in Jesup and just outside of the city limits.

A high end EF1 tornado with peak winds near 110 mph touched down in Odum and tracked ENE for about 4.5 miles before lifting up again. There were 8 reported injuries. A home on a cinder block foundation was spun off of its base. Widespread tree and power line damage occurred near Odum including along Walter Griffis Road, Hires Avenue, Hyma Poppell Loop and Tank Road.

A National Weather Service storm survey confirmed an EF1 touchdown near 632 Longford Road. At that location trees were overturned and snapped, a swimming pool cage was destroyed and a shed was flipped over onto its side. Winds here were estimated to be 90 mph or EF-1 velocity. The vortex then moved northeast over a wooded area and lake snapping trees. This area was not assessable; however, damage appeared to be in the EF-1 range. The storm then moved over Bethlehem Road downing and snapping trees and power lines. A school bus was also tossed into a ditch near Bethlehem Road and Fender Drive with no injuries and no students onboard. The funnel then struck a shed and mobile home destroying both with debris thrown approximately one quarter mile into the woods. The occupant of the mobile home was tossed from the structure with minor injuries and winds in this area were estimated at 110 mph or strong EF-1 status. The system them moved through a wooded area again snapping trees and crossed Grantham Road near Kicklighter Drive again snapping trees and power lines. Winds were estimated near 90 mph in this area and the vortex lifted off the ground at this point.

NWS Storm Survey revealed 56 homes were damaged or destroyed (includes mobile and manufactured homes), 12 businesses were damaged or destroyed, 2 public buildings were damaged as well as 1 church. Only minor injuries were reported. Georgia Emergency Management issued a statement that stated 61 homes and 8 businesses were damaged; 10 homes and 5 business were destroyed. Below is a time line of calls the NWS received:0430 pm EDT: Emergency Management reported 3 businesses destroyed and campers severely damaged in Screven from a tornado. 0430 pm EDT: Emergency Management reported numerous trees and power lines down in Screven. 0432 pm EDT: Tranied stomr spotter repored a tornado 5 miles south of Jesup and about 8 miles south of Odum. 0449 pm EDT: Tranied storm spotter and amateur radio operator reported quarter size hail in downtown Jesup and a tornado in Screven along 9 Run Road. 0450 pm EDT: Emergency Management reported campers were destroyed in Screven and a cabinet shop (Sreven Cabinet Company) was severely damaged with 1 person trapped inside. Other reports received about this event included 2 children trapped in a video store in Screven. They were pulled out and taken to the hospital with no major injuries. The Jesup Press Sentinel newspaper reported extensive damage occurred along J.L. Tyre Street and U.S. 84 in Screven. Two businesses hit particulary hard were the Screven Cabinet Company and Boyette's Camper Sales. One male was trapped in the cabinet shop after the tornado, and was successfully rescued with no notable injuries. A truck driver was driving at about 25 miles per hour in front of the cabinet shop when the tornado hit and flipped the vehicle, and the driver sufferd minor injuries. Additional business damaged by the tornado included the town's video store, Mary's IGA and Wasdin Cabinet and Doors. 0450 pm EDT: The general public sent an email that and reported a tornado in Screven and 2 inch hail in Jesup.
