Skywarn-trained weather spotters and members of the general public observed ice accumulations from freezing rain ranging from 0.25 to 0.5 inches in thickness across nearly all of Charlotte County, including in the communities of Keysville, Madisonville, and Charlotte Court House. Over 5,000 power outages were reported at one point. It was estimated that as much as 88 percent of the county's residents were without power by the end of the storm, with around 154 power poles snapped and 221 power lines brought down due to the weight of the ice. What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);

  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
