Episodes
Strong winds occurred across the Tennessee Valley ahead of a cold front. Some locations had trees and limbs blown down, resulting in some power outages. Behind the front, temperatures dropped quickly, with some locations recording wind chill values of -15 F or lower. Some snow accumulations were also reported, mainly in the mountains.
A low pressure system tracking across the southeastern states brought an anomalously late season heavy snowfall event to the Tennessee Valley and southern Appalachian region. This was the most significant widespread March winter event in the region since the '93 Storm of the Century. This event also produced the most single-day snowfall at the Knoxville climate site (6.5) since the 1993 storm. The combination of high snowfall rates and strong winds led to scattered power outages, in addition to difficult travel.
Following the devastating tornado outbreak across Kentucky and neighboring areas, a line of strong to severe storms moved through the Tennessee Valley region Saturday morning into the early afternoon. The main impact across the region was damaging winds, with many areas having numerous downed trees and a few snapped powerlines. Thousands lost power in the region, with a few injuries reported as well.
Thunderstorms associated with the remnants of Tropical Cyclone Ida moved across parts of East Tennessee. One storm blew down trees and powerlines in Rhea County. There were localized reports of flooding due to the rainfall gradually accumulating throughout the day, but occasionally heavier rain did fall toward the latter afternoon and early evening hours.
A strong cold front approached the Tennessee Valley and southern Appalachians during the late afternoon and evening hours of Monday, June 21. A warm and humid air mass ahead of the front (following the remnants of Tropical Storm Claudette) led to the development of numerous clusters of strong to severe thunderstorms that tracked from west to east. The main impact from these storms was damaging winds, with two dozen reports of wind damage in the form of down trees and power lines. A barn was destroyed in Roane County, and a metal frame building was damaged in Speedwell in Claiborne County. In addition to the damaging winds, golf ball sized hail occurred in Hancock County.
