Recent Weather Related Causes of Power Outages in Reno County

A compact but powerful upper level low pressure system moved out of the southern Rockies and into the Oklahoma Panhandle and Kansas during the morning hours of January 21st. This storm system brought significant snowfall to west central Kansas with amounts ranging from a dusting to seven inches. The snow lasted through much of the 21st into the early hours of the 22nd.

January 21, 2023

High Wind. Widespread non-thunderstorm winds wreaked havoc across the county. Sustained wind speeds routinely ranged between 40 to 50 mph with a peak gust of 84 mph. A tree was reported down in Arlington and in Nickerson. A semi was rolled over on Highway 50 one mile NNE of Partridge. In SW Hutchinson, tree branches were blown out and shingles were blown off of roofs. Two miles WNW of Hutchinson, power poles were blown down.||Non-thunderstorm wind gusts across the county.|Three miles E of Hutchinson - 84 mph.|Three miles W of Langdon - 66 mph.|Six miles WNW of Haven - 60 mph.

Strong winds again pummeled portions of north central KS on the 12th. Wind gusts up to 75 mph were recorded along with several power poles being blown down.

Thunderstorm Wind. A report of damage to a mobile home awning and a couple of cars. Time is estimated from radar. The city of Haven was reported to be without power too.

Thunderstorm Wind. Power poles were snapped and damage was reported to a deck near Cheney Lake.
