La Crescent Power Outages Caused by Weather
Events
COOP and volunteer snow observers reported that between 2 and 4 inches of snow fell across Houston County. In addition to the snow, a period of sleet and freezing rain occurred that coated exposed surfaces with a glaze of ice. With the glaze of ice, some power poles and lines were brought down by the strong winds causing about a 3,000 people to lose power.

A lightning strike hit a transformer in La Crescent and the resulting damage also took out a nearby substation. Around 3,400 customers were without power until the next day.

Episodes
A line of storms moved across portions of southeast Minnesota during the morning of June 15th. These storms produced some wind damage with trees blown down near Harmony (Fillmore County). Near Caledonia (Houston County) a localized downburst brought down trees, power lines, barn and some outbuildings. Some quarter sized hail also fell in Fountain (Fillmore County).
Thunderstorms rolled across southeast Minnesota during the afternoon of August 4th. A lightning strike from one of these storms hit a transformer in La Crescent (Houston County). The damage from the strike was enough to make a nearby substation unrepairable causing around 3,400 customers to be without power until the following day.
A powerful winter storm moved from Missouri to lower Michigan on February 17. This system brought total snow accumulations of around 4 inches to a small part of southeast Minnesota near La Crosse, Wisconsin. Specific snowfall totals from volunteer weather observers included 3.8 inches near Reno. In addition to the snow, strong northwest winds gusting up to 30 to 35 mph caused hazardous traveling conditions.

The National Weather Service has confirmed at least two tornadoes touched down in southern Minnesota on Wednesday night, in Hartland and near Lewiston — the state’s first December tornadoes on record. Power and cleanup crews are working their way in the area a day after the storm.
