Laconia Power Outages Caused by Weather
Events
High winds associated with the remnants of Sandy knocked down trees and branches and caused widespread power outages causing an estimated $387,000 in damages.
An E-F2 tornado moving north northeast out of Rockingham County entered Belknap County about 2 miles southwest of South Barnstead near Province Road. The storm travaled almost 12 miles before crossing into Strafford County resulting in E-F0 to E-F2 damage. There were numerous houses and buildings that were damaged or destroyed by the tornado or by falling trees. In addition, there were thousands of downed trees and numerous power lines down along the path of the storm.
Episodes
Law enforcement agencies reported severe thunderstorms knocked down trees and/or power lines in Laconia, Meredith, New Hampton, Moultonborough, and several other surrounding towns.
Lightning struck a utility pole in the parking lot of a greyhound race track in Belmont. The lightning followed power and phone lines into the building and shocked four employees that were working with telephones and computers, or touching the metal door of the kennels. In addition, some patrons of the race track that were in contact with metal also got a small jolt from the nearby lightning strike. Also, falling debris from the pole damaged two cars in the parking lot.
Lightning caused a power surge that damaged the electronic scales at the Laconia transfer station resulting in about $5000. in damages.

Tropical Storm Isaias brought limited impacts to Belknap County with isolated reports of trees and branches down leading to scattered power outages. Overall impacts to the power grid were limited. Locally heavy rain in the White Mountains occurred with generally 1.5 falling, but no flooding was reported.
