Power Outage in Lake City, MN

Light freezing rain moved across Wabasha County during the evening of January 2nd into the morning of the 3rd. As a result of the ice accumulation, some power outages occurred that impacted over 800 customers across the county.

A couple of trees were blown down onto a power line southwest of Lake City.

One person was killed in an accident on State Highway 42 near Plainview. The accident occurred on icy roads created by sleet that fell ahead of the heavy snow. Northwest winds of 20 to 35 mph with gusts of 40 to 50 mph produced a period of blizzard conditions across Wabasha County. Whiteout conditions occurred during the blizzard and the blowing snow caused severe drifting to occur that closed several roads. Power outages occurred as the heavy, wet snow and the high winds combined to bring down power lines and tree branches. Road crews had a very difficult time clearing the roads and poor road conditions persisted for several days after the storm. This resulted in at least one additional accident occurring on the 23rd that resulted in non-life threatening injuries to one person. All the schools in the county were either closed or delayed the start of classes on both the 20th and 21st. The highest reported snowfall amount was 10.3 inches near Zumbro Falls and the highest recorded wind speed was 50 mph by a mesonet station near Kellogg.

Several 10 to 12 inch diameter trees were snapped off by high winds west of Wabasha along County Road 30. A few tree limbs were also blown down in the city of Wabasha and the power was out in parts of the city for about 30 minutes.

Major flooding occurred in the town of Hammond due to record flooding on the Zumbro River. Of the 75 homes in the town, 19 were damaged and 20 were destroyed. Power, water and septic services were down in the town for several days. Businesses in the town also saw extensive damage.

Hundreds of trees and at least a half dozen power poles were blown down throughout the city of Lake City. Damage was also reported to several homes as well as to a 100,000 bushel grain bin and a dryer at a local business. The grain bin was destroyed.

A line of storms moved across portions of southeast Minnesota during the evening of July 12th. These storms blew down some trees and power lines near Elgin (Wabasha County).

A cold front pushed into eastern Minnesota in the early morning hours of July 11th. Severe thunderstorms along the cold front knocked down trees near Kellogg (Wabasha County) and caused power outages near Mazeppa (Wabasha County).

Wind gusts up to 60 mph caused power outages.
