Largo Power Outages Caused by Weather

Events

July 20, 2005 - Tornado

The tornado, which touched down along Ulmerton Road just east of Seminole Boulevard, moved northwest for about 1/2 mile, caused damage at five mobile home parks. Much of the damage occurred at the Palm Hill Country Club mobile home park. In all, 51 mobile homes were damaged, 25 with heavy damage. No injuries or fatalities were reported. About 25,000 residents of the area lost power after the event.

There were numerous reports of lightning striking a home, an apartment building, and power poles. Damage amounts were not available.

Lightning struck and ignited the ceiling of an assisted living facility on the 700 block of Starkey Road in Largo. Clearwater fire officials determined that the lighting initially struck the power cable for the buildings central air conditioning system, traveled down the communications cables, and ignited the ceiling of the 87,000 square foot building.
