This was a delayed report. A power line was down at 6th Street and Maine Street as well as 25th Street and Iowa Street in lawrence. A tree was down near 8th and Alabama.

A quarter of an inch of ice accumulated on trees, powerlines, and other suspended objects, generally within an axis that stretched from the southwestern to northeastern part of the county. Roadways were very slick, and a number of accidents were reported in the rural areas. A combination of sleet and snow mixed into the freezing rain toward the later part of the event time.

Several powerlines were downed throughout Douglas County. Within the city of Lawrence, powerlines were blown down near the intersection of Sixth Street and Wakarusa Drive. More than 1,600 people were left without power.

A spotter had been driving along 6th Street near Wakarusa when strong winds overtook his car and forced him to pull over. He estimated wind speeds around 80 miles per hour, and possibly stronger. One transformer was blown near this location. Power outages across the city affected 8400 residences. A deck roof was blown over a house at another residence. A mobile home on First Street in North Lawrence was heavily damaged when a tree fell onto the bedroom portion of the trailer. Eighteen to twenty inch diameter trees were blown down at the intersections of 6th Street and Queens Road, and at 6th Street and Iowa. A tractor trailer was also reported to have been blown over in north Lawrence. At least one tree fell onto a home and caused damage. The Langston Hughes School gymnasium on the west side of town sustained approximately eighty thousand dollars in roof damage.

One quarter to one half of an inch of ice was reported to have accumulated on surfaces across the county. 2800 residents of the county were without power Tuesday evening, including some on the north side of Lawrence. One non-vehicular accident was reported when a man attempted to remove a tree limb from his roof, and became trapped on his ladder by the tree limb.

Limbs up to 3 inches in diameter from 2 live trees were blown down by thunderstorm winds, which knocked out power to the spotter's home.

At 16:00pm CST, strong winds knocked tree limbs onto power lines and wrapped several power lines. As a result, 2500 Lawrence residents lost power, and traffic lights across the city went out. Wind gusts up to 40mph had been recorded at the Lawrence Municipal Airport before 14:00pm CST. At 14:00pm CST, a 45mph gust was recorded (the peak wind gust for the day), and 41mph gust at 15:00pm CST.

A mixture of freezing rain, sleet and snow developed across eastern Kansas during the early morning hours of Saturday December 21st. Widespread snow, sleet and freezing rain overspread the area during the afternoon of the 21st with the height of the storm occurring between 5pm Saturday and 3am Sunday. Freezing rain accumulating to around one quarter inch across parts of the area while snowfall amounts of 6 to 9 inches were common across other areas north of interstate 70 by Sunday morning the 22nd. Impacts were mainly limited to hazardous travel with numerous accidents reported. Only sporadic power outages were noted.

A powerful storm system swept across Kansas on Sunday, bringing several rounds of thunderstorms to the area. Several locations reported hail from pea size up to 2 inches in diameter. What made this storm system noteworthy was that much of the thunderstorm activity occurred with temperatures between 33 and 40 degrees.

Elevated thunderstorm moved southeast through Jefferson and Douglas county, but became surface based before it reached Ottawa. In Ottawa the storm did much damage to structures and vehicles on the highway. The destruction continued through Anderson county with wind speeds estimated at 90-100 mph caused over 300 power poles to snap.

A powerful upper level system moved into the central plains allowing thunderstorms to develop over portions of East Central Kansas during the afternoon hours. Thunderstorms produced quarter size hail over portions of East Central Kansas.

A strong cold front tracked across eastern Kansas during the afternoon and evening hours of September 30th. Strong southwesterly sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph ahead of the main trough knocked down weak branches in Ottawa County. Cloud cover during the morning hours prevented widespread and robust convection from developing as the cold front surged across the region. But, sufficient heating and favorable vertical wind profiles allowed for a broken line of thunderstorms to develop right around the noon hour CST. Thunderstorm wind gusts ravaged the far east central portion of the state, knocking down tree branches and power lines during the evening. Small hail was also reported with some of the more intense storms.

An area of very heavy snow developed and was associated with a strong low pressure system over the southern plains. Numerous school closings and non injury accidents occurred. Snow accumulated to nearly a foot in a few spots. Gusty north winds of 10 to 20 mph brought drifts one to three feet deep. This storm was unusual to the extent that large differences in accumulations occurred within a short distance. For example, one area would receive only a few flakes while a city only 15 miles away would have 6 to 8 inches. This storm and the ice storm of the previous day prompted the governor to issue a state of disaster emergency for Anderson, Coffey, Douglas, Franklin, Lyon, Osage and Shawnee counties. This ensured state resources would be available to areas most affected by the two storms including expediting the restoration of electrical power.

Thunderstorms developed over north central Kansas early in the evening of the 8th. Many became severe and produced numerous reports of large hail and damaging winds as they moved to the east before finally exiting the area late in the evening. Strong winds damaged many buildings and residences across the area. But the most damaging event of all occurred in Topeka where downburst winds damaged 40 cars at a dealership plus the roof of the dealership itself. Total damage from this event alone was estimated at 1 million dollars. In addition, powerful straightline winds moved away from the thunderstorms and did consideable damage in a corridor bounded by the Kansas River on the north and Interstate 70 on the south and extended from Manhattan to just west of Topeka. Winds in this area were extimated as high as 70 mph. The most noticeable damage from this part of the event occurred in Paxico where the winds left a 20 foot by 40 foot gaping hole in the roof of the Junior High school. Ironically, this was the second consecutive year this school had been damaged from severe weather. Total damage from the March 8 event was estimated at 1.22 million dollars.
