July 10, 2020 - Tornado

The tornado tracked across forested terrain of the northern Black Hills for 15.5 miles. Many trees were snapped or uprooted along its path. Although the tornado itself did not cause property damage, trees were blown down onto houses and power lines.

Lightning struck a cable that supplies power to one of the mine shafts at the Homestake Mining Co. This caused problems with the shaft elevator, the compressor and milling operations. There were people at the bottom of the mine who were not able to exit through the shaft. Instead they took mining tractors through the mining tunnels to another shaft and exited there.
