Wichita County Dispatch relayed an officer report of near zero visibility due to blowing dust caused by winds with an estimated peak gust of 100 mph. The strong winds were able to snap a power pole at mile marker 106 along Kansas Highway 25.
West to northwesterly winds up to 6 mph combined with cold temperatures as cold as 3 below produced wind chills as low as 15 degrees below zero across Wichita County. The coldest wind chills were observed near Leoti, Kansas. Impacts: power outages.
A mesonet station near Leoti observed a high wind gust of 62 mph as a strong cold front passed over. The station lost power after the observation. The strong winds lifted dirt into the air and caused reduced visibility less than one-quarter mile in the town of Leoti.
Report received of 5 power poles broken on the NW side of town due to thunderstorm wind gusts. Time is radar estimated and estimated wind gust speed is based on storm damage.
Episodes
During the evening hours, discrete supercell thunderstorms developed across Southwest Kansas. One storm in particular developed over southern Wichita County, producing thunderstorm wind gusts up to 100 mph that caused near zero visibility due to blowing dust and damage to a power pole. Nickel sized hail was also observed with this storm.

High winds knocked over power lines near the towns of Marienthal and Lydia, sparking two large fires. The fire near Marienthal began around 14:30 PM CST burning fields and one home. The Marienthal fire burned approximately 1200 acres and was put out around 22:30 PM CST. The Lydia fire began around 13:50 PM CST burning fields, two homes, and several vehicles over a span of 8300 acres. This fire injured one non-hospitalized person and another person died the next day due to burns and a collapsed lung from protecting his home. The Lydia fire was extinguished around 22:06 PM CST.
