Episodes
A large and amplifying upper trough dug south through the eastern two-thirds of the United States along and east of the Rockies on December 22nd, which ushered in the coldest temperatures for December in decades to much of the country leading up to the Christmas Day holiday weekend. This very cold arctic air mass moved into extreme Southeast Oklahoma, Southwest Arkansas, and Northeast Texas during the morning hours of the 22nd, with temperatures falling sharply some 20-30+ degrees with the attendant cold frontal passage into the single digits and lower teens by the morning hours of the 23rd. Very strong and gusty northwest winds of 35-45 mph were observed behind the front even through the morning of the 24th, producing a long duration of wind chill values ranging from 0 to as low as -7 degrees across Deep East Texas from the evening of the 22nd to the morning of the 24th. While the temperatures associated with this arctic air mass were not quite record-breaking for this time of year, the long duration of subfreezing temperatures, which persisted nearly 2 days, resulted in multiple reports of freezing and bursting of water pipes, as well as sporadic power outages across these areas.||Here are the lowest wind chill values recorded across Deep East Texas from December 22nd through the morning of the 24th:||Cherokee County: 2 SSE New Summerfield, -7 degrees; Jacksonville, -6 degrees. |Rusk County: Henderson, -7 degrees; 1 NW Tatum, -7 degrees; Lake Striker, -5 degrees; Henderson Rusk County Airport, -3 degrees. |Panola County: Panola County Airport, -7 degrees; Carthage, -6 degrees; Nansco Farms (Gary), -6 degrees; Lake Murvaul, -4 degrees. |Shelby County: Center, -4 degrees. |Nacogdoches County: Nacogdoches A.L. An upper low pressure system spinning over Deep South Texas during the afternoon of July 6th, produced a weak trough axis that extended along the Southeast Texas coast into Southwest and Central Louisiana and Central Mississippi. These upper level features enhanced the seabreeze, with a cluster of showers and thunderstorms quickly spreading inland across Southern and Central Louisiana and Deep East and Southeast Texas. Diurnal heating resulted in temperatures climbing into the lower 90s across Deep East Texas and Central Louisiana on the 6th, resulting in moderate instability within a very moist air mass in place. These showers and thunderstorms intensified as they spread west into the unstable environment in Deep East Texas, with an isolated severe thunderstorm developing over Angelina County, producing damaging winds that downed trees and power lines near Zavalla, Huntington, and Burke. A 62 mph wind gust was also measured at the Angelina County Airport from these storms, before they quickly entered Northern Trinity and Southeast Houston Counties and weakened.
An upper level low pressure system shifted southeast across Southern Kansas during the morning and afternoon hours of April 7th, which drove a cold front southeast into Southeast Oklahoma, Southwest Arkansas, and Northeast Texas during the morning. A strong low level jet ahead of this upper low and associated cold front ushered ample Gulf moisture northward into East Texas and North Louisiana, with large scale forcing, shear, and instability increasing during the afternoon along and just ahead of the front contributing to the development of a line of severe thunderstorms across portions of Deep East Texas and North Louisiana. These storms downed trees and power lines across Angelina and Southern San Augustine Counties before shifting southeast into Southeast Texas and West-Central Louisiana in the late afternoon.
A strong upper trough moved across Eastern Oklahoma and East-Central Texas during the morning hours of October 23rd, before progressing east across Southwest Arkansas and North Louisiana during the afternoon. This trough reinforced a strong cold front southeast through the region, with warm, humid air and deepening moisture spreading north into the areas ahead of the front. With the increase in large scale forcing along and ahead of the front and accompanying upper trough, scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms developed over much of the region, with one of these storms briefly becoming severe during the early afternoon hours over Central Angelina County, where damaging winds downed a few trees and power lines in Downtown Lufkin. These storms diminished during the late afternoon and early evening with the departure of the front, as much cooler air drier air spilled southeast in its wake.
Major Hurricane Laura tracked north northwest across the Central and Northern Gulf of Mexico from the Central Carribean Sea near Cuba, making landfall in Southwest Louisiana near Cameron around 1 am on August 27th as a strong Category 4 hurricane with maximum sustained winds near 150 mph, and a minimum central pressure of 938 mb. Laura remained a hurricane as it tracked north across Southwest and Central Louisiana and into Natchitoches Parish, before weakening to a tropical storm as it moved northeast across Northcentral Louisiana and Southcentral Arkansas. Despite being on the west side of Laura's center, portions of extreme Eastern Texas observed wind gusts between 45-60+ mph, mainly across Sabine, San Augustine, Angelina, Shelby, Rusk, Panola, and Harrison Counties. These winds downed trees and power lines over these areas during the morning, before winds weakened in the afternoon with the departure of Laura into Southern Arkansas. Rainfall amounts ranged from 1.50-3.00 inches across the eastern border counties with Louisiana. Higher amounts of 3-6+ inches were observed across Southern Panola, Shelby, San Augustine, and Sabine Counties. However, no flooding was reported across East Texas from Hurricane Laura.||Here are the peak wind gusts at various automated stations across the affected areas of East Texas: ||Marshall (Harrison County), 48 mph|Carthage (Panola County), 47 mph|Sabine South RAWS (Sabine County), 44 mph |San Augustine (San Augustine County), 36 mph. ||Here are the known damage across various counties affected in East Texas: ||Angelina County: Scattered trees and power lines down countywide. ||San Augustine County: Scattered trees and power lines down countywide. ||Sabine County: Numerous trees down across the eastern half of the county with more sporadic damage across the western half of the county. A pine tree fell into a single wide mobile home and killed a 54 year old man in the Pendleton Harbor subdivision near Toledo Bend Reservoir. The tree fall was generally to the south-southwest to south-southeast. ||Shelby County: Scattered trees and power lines down countywide. ||Panola County: Sporadic trees down in Carthage and southwest of De Berry. ||Rusk County: Numerous trees and power lines down countywide. ||Harrison County: A tree was blown down onto a house in Waskom.
