Power Outage in Magee, MS

Multiple power lines were blown down.

An up to two mile wide swath of straight-line wind damage associated with the rear flank downdraft of a thunderstorm occurred through the D'Lo and Mendenhall areas of Simpson County. Residents in the area described an approximately 5 minute period of high winds and heavy rain as the storm pushed through. Several large trees were uprooted and snapped in the swath, and a few were snapped at the trunk. Several trees fell onto homes and power lines. A few trees fell onto an apartment complex in Mendenhall, with the roof sustaining damage. A service station canopy along US Highway 49 collapsed into the pumps and convenience store. In the corridor of strongest winds which occurred on the north side of downtown Mendenhall, wind gusts were estimated to be near 90 MPH, with tree damage observed on most streets in that area.

Tropical storm force wind gusts resulted in multiple trees and power lines being downed across the county.

Several pictures and reports on social media from across the county showed large branches and a few trees downed by around 0.25 inches of accumulated ice. Some power outages occurred in parts of the county.

A mixture of freezing rain and sleet fell across the county. Accumulations of three tenths of an inch of ice and one and half inches of sleet occurred across the county. Ice was worse in the southeast half of the county, which resulted in numerous limbs and some trees being brought down and power outages.

During the late evening, a severe thunderstorm was responsible for an extensive swath of significant damage across several counties in the southern portion of the NWS Jackson service area. The main corridor of focused and higher end wind damage was across southern Copiah to far southern Simpson, as well as all of northern sections of Lawrence, Jefferson Davis and Covington counties before dissipating across northwest Jones County. Based on a NWS damage survey of portions of this swath, along with accounts and assessments from local Emergency Managers, significant wind speeds across this swath ranged between 80 and 100 mph. Within the overall swath, there were generally 2 to 3 focused corridors, roughly running from west northwest to east southeast, where the greatest concentration of damage occurred. General dimensions of the swath can be described as roughly 80 miles long with a width of 6 to 8 miles where the greatest concentration of damage occurred. Damage across this large swath were primarily damaged trees and downed power lines. Tree damage was a combination of uprooted and snapped trees and was quite extensive and best characterized by hundreds of thousands of damaged trees. Downed power lines and broken poles were extensive as well across the swath. Additionally, many structures were damaged with degrees of damage from minor to major. All of this was due to a combination of the wind itself causing damage or by downed trees damaging the structure. In Simpson County, the strongest hit area was right along the southern border, where many trees were snapped or uprooted.

This EF3 tornado started in far southeast Simpson County (Saratoga community) where a few trees were downed. It then moved into southwest Smith County where the damage increased. The Calvary Church was damaged along with a few other buildings, sheds and one small wooden home had the roof off. Many trees were uprooted and snapped along with power lines down. The tornado continued northeast across County roads 53 and 57. Intensity increased as tree and power line damage increased. Several homes in the area sustained some damage and 3 different groups of chicken houses were heavily damaged or destroyed. The tornado continued to intensify as it approached Highway 28 near Mize. Numerous and extensive tree damage was noted, especially in a focused corridor, indicative of a multi-vortex tornado. The most intense damage occurred just off County Road 58 where a well built brick home lost its roof and 75% of its exterior walls. An F250 truck and Toyota truck were thrown 200 yards into a pasture along with a few ATVs thrown a considerable distance. Multiple structures and chicken houses were heavily damaged near Highway 28 on the west, northwest, and north side of Mize. Extensive tree damage occurred as well along with power lines down. Along County Road 100, a well built brick home lost the entire roof and one outer wall. A large shed was destroyed and a tractor and boat were thrown 50 yards. Numerous power lines/poles were down as well. The tornado continued northeast and crossed Highway 35 and the intensity lessened a bit. Beyond Highway 35, most of the damage was to trees and power lines along with some minor damage to a few homes. The tornado dissipated just after it crossed County Road 93. Maximum winds were 150 mph. Total path length was 18.63 miles. Max path width was 1320 yards in Smith County.

This tornado developed along Brandon Williamsburg Road near the Simpson-Rankin line and moved mostly northward to just north of Puckett and up Highway 43. At the early stages, this tornado was fairly wide but was only breaking large limbs and downing some trees. Some EF1 tree damage was noted along County Line Road, then weakening occurred again as it moved North-Northeast and approached Highway 18. Intensity picked up again along Highway 18 as a few corridors of trees were downed and some power lines and poles. Here seems to be the beginning of multiple vortices. As the tornado moved past Highway 18, most of the path was west of Highway 43. Rapid intensification occurred as it neared John Mayton Road. Here, it grew quite wide with two primary intense corridors for a period as it peaked in intensity, EF2. The evidence was extensive tree damage with massive swaths of trees snapped and uprooted. A couple homes were in the vicinity of these and suffered some damage, mostly from trees. The tornado began to turn more North and North-northwest from here as its movement was being influenced by an approaching larger meso-vortex. Just north of John Mayton Road, more evidence of multiple vortices was noted with a zone of higher damage on the east side of the highway and another 500 yds west. Another extensive tree damage corridor occurred near this area with EF2 type tree snapping. From this point, the tornado began to weaken some as its circulation was becoming more affected by the approaching meso-vortex and incipient tornado. In the vicinity of Thornton Road, this tornado became absorbed into the meso-vortex within the eastward advancing line and the tornado dissipated while the other tornado maintained, then headed eastward. This tornado continued into Rankin County. Maximum estimated winds 84 MPH. Total path length 9.86 miles.

A tree was blown down across double circuit power lines near Pinola.

An average of 4 to 5 inches of heavy snow fell across Simpson County, with totals of up to 6 inches measured near Magee and Harrisville. Accumulating snowfall led to several traffic accidents, downed tree limbs, and power outages across the county.

This tornado touched down just east of Magee along Highway 28 at the intersection of Pine Grove Road. The tornado snapped a few trees here, then quickly grew and intensified. In the first half to 1 mile along Pine Grove Road, numerous trees were snapped and uprooted along with power lines being knocked down and some power poles snapped. Multiple homes had minor to moderate roof damage and most|of these were along the edge of the tornado. However, there were a few that were more directly in the path. These sustained heavier damage with one home completely destroyed. The roof was blown off along with most of the outer wall off. Here peak intensity was reached with winds estimated at 120 mph. Multiple sheds or large|barn type structures were heavily damaged or destroyed in this area as well. High end EF1 damage continued through the remainder of Simpson County where the tornado crossed C Stringer Road, Pine Grove Road again, and County Road 65 before moving into Smith County. Once in Smith County, most of the damage was from downed trees. The heaviest damage occurred as it crossed County Road 65 and County Road 108 where dozens of trees and several power lines were downed. A few|homes also sustained minor roof damage in this area. As the tornado crossed County Road 503, it weakened some but remained at EF1 intensity as it continued to the north-northeast and crossed County Road 114. The remainder of the damage was EF0 intensity as the tornado tracked west of Raleigh before it dissipated at Highway 35,|roughly 5 miles north of town. Maximum estimated winds were 120mph, which occurred in Simpson County. The total path length was 19.2 miles. One injury occurred.

A swath of wind came through the eastern portion of Simpson County. Multiple trees and power lines were blown down in the Braxton area. Multiple trees were blown down near Martinville. Multiple roads were closed around that are due to debris. Some structure damage occurred from trees. The strongest winds occurred near Mendenhall. This is where numerous trees were snapped and uprooted near the intersection of Highway 13 and 43. A large tree fell on a house and damaged the roof. The estimated winds in this location was 80mph.

Several trees were blown down across the county between early afternoon of the 29th and mid day on the 30th. Power lines were blown down near Mendenhall during the afternoon of the 29th resulting in large power outages in the city.

This tornado developed west of Braxton, near Barney Smith Road, and moved east northeast through northern Simpson County, through the town of Braxton, and then lifted near St. John Road, east of Braxton. Many trees were snapped and uprooted along the path with some down on houses in a convergent pattern along its path. Some trees fell on vehicles and many power lines were blown down across roads. The tornado was a half to three quarters of a mile wide for most of its path. Maximum winds were around 100 mph.

This tornado touched down in the Martinville Community. Damage started just south of Blackwell Road in an open field and tracked north northeast. The heaviest damage was along Blackwell Road were a large sed was destroyed and several trees were snapped and uprooted. A power lines was also down and a trampoline was thrown and heavily damaged. The shed had its roof removed and a few wall collapsed. Tin and debris was thrown for 100 to 300 yards. The tornado then crossed Highway 540, several large limbs were snapped with a few uprooted trees. Insulation from the shed was scattered along the path.

Numerous trees were snapped and uprooted across the northeast portion of Simpson County along Highway 541. Several trees were across Highway 541 and had taken down a few power lines.

This tornado touched down just northwest of Harrisville along Highway 469. Here, the most intense damage occurred where a large section of the roof of a framed house was removed. At this location, an outbuilding was destroyed and blown away along with numerous trees snapped and uprooted. The tornado then moved just north of due east, across northern Simpson County, downing trees and power lines, mainly EF0 type damage with another area of EF1 damage around Ainsworth Road. Here, some large trees were snapped and uprooted along with some shingle damage to a home and tin roof damage to some outbuildings occurred. The tornado then crossed US Highway 49 between Braxton and D'Lo, downing a number of trees and depositing tree debris in the highway median. Some higher end EF1 damage then occurred as the tornado crossed Cato and Campbells Creek Roads where extensive tree damage occurred. The tornado continued eastward, crossing Highway 13, downing more trees. The tornado then dissipated just west of Highway 541.
