Episodes
Beginning on December 22nd a powerful storm was developing over the Ohio River Valley. On December 23rd the center of the storm was deepening rapidly (974mb) as it lifted through the eastern Great Lakes. While the center tracked into southern Ontario, high pressure retreated into the Canadian Maritimes creating a strong pressure gradient across the region. Strong southerly winds developed as a result, with speeds in excess of 80 knots at around 2,000 feet. Several rounds of strong to damaging wind gusts occurred, which brought widespread power outages with over 120,000 customers without power.||Precipitation moved into western New Hampshire during the late evening hours of December 22, and moved across the remainder of the state by the early morning of December 23. Snow quickly changed over to rain on the night of December 22nd, with a changeover later in the mountains towards daybreak on December 23rd. The precipitation continued through the evening hours of December 23, then gradually ended from south to north that night. Overland flooding was prevalent for areas where rainfall exceeded 2 inches. The impacts varied from standing water in fields to complete road washouts. The runoff exceeded capacity for most feeder creeks and rivers.||The rapidly deepening area of low pressure over the Great Lakes region combined with very high astronomical tides to produce the fourth highest storm tide ever in Portland. In addition, storm to hurricane force east to southeasterly winds occurred along the coast with nearshore waves of 15 to 20 feet coinciding during peak storm surge. Significant to major coastal damage occurred during the morning high tide cycle across the Seacoast of New Hampshire.
An unseasonably warm and moist airmass for early March worked into southern New Hampshire during the day on March 7th. This allowed for increased instability ahead of an approaching cold front. A surface low pressure system and associated cold front tracked across the region from the Ohio River valley during the evening. Strong westerly surface winds were advecting cold polar air behind it. A continues fine line of low-topped thunderstorms developed on the cold frontal boundary across southwest New Hampshire. This line progressed eastward through the evening, downing numerous trees and powerlines before weakening as it reached the Merrimack River Valley.
A hot and humid airmass with heat index values well into the 90s was firmly in place when an upper level trough and associated cold front begin to move into northern New Hampshire on the afternoon of June 30th. Storms began to develop and quickly became severe due to very unstable conditions being fueled by the near record heat and humidity. The storms traveled from west to east straight to the coast through the afternoon hours, leaving in their wake downed trees and power outages.
A potent short wave trough crossed the region as it rounded the base of a long wave trough centered north over Hudson Bay. A powerful 150+ kt jet aloft provided more than enough dynamic support for the development of organized convection, with a surface low deepening as it tracked eastward across southern Quebec. An anomalous warm and moist airmass for October allowed temperatures to reach near 70 across southern New Hampshire. An organized squall line developed across New York and quickly tracked across southern New England with southern New Hampshire being on the northern edge of this damaging derecho squall line that brought widespread damage from Albany New York to Cape Cod.
An upper level disturbance combined with a weakening cold front to initiate showers and thunderstorms across southern New England. These storms produced damaging winds, downing trees, wires, and power poles throughout the area.

What is Power Outage?
Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.
What Causes Power Outages?
- Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
- Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
- Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.
What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?
- Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
- Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
- Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
- Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
