Power Outage in Mansfield, LA

Numerous trees and power lines downed along Highway 171 near Red Bluff Road, as well as across much of De Soto Parish.

An EF-1 tornado with maximum estimated winds near 110 mph touched down along Highway 171 just south of the Stonewall city limits where it snapped numerous large hardwood trees and some power poles between Red Bluff Road and Dixie Swim Club Road. The tornado continued east-northeast along or just south of Red Bluff Road, eventually crossing Bethel Road, Stonewall Frierson Road, and White Springs Road, snapping and uprooting numerous trees along its path. One home sustained heavy damage after several large trees fell on it. From White Springs Road, the tornado crossed over into extreme Southeast Caddo Parish before lifting shortly thereafter.

Twelve empty railroad cars were blown off of the track at the International Paper Plant. Wooden power poles were also snapped at the base.

Numerous trees and powerlines were downed across the central and northern portions of the parish between Mansfield and Stonewall, Louisiana.

Fairly extensive wind damage reported at the Mansfield International Paper Mill along Highway 509. Several pieces of tin were ripped off of buildings and roofs. A few powerpoles were broken along with an awning blown down and an empty trailer truck was blown over.

A forest fire, started by a downed powerline which ignited dry fuels across the southern portion of DeSoto Parish in Northwest Louisiana spread quickly because of low humidity and strong south winds gusting upwards of 30 mph. Just after 2 p.m. crews from fire districts in DeSoto Parish, north Sabine Parish and across the state line in Texas were dispatched to an area off of New Benson Road, south of Mansfield.|About a dozen homes were evacuated as a precaution, although none were burned.||The fire, which burned hundreds of acres, is believed to have been started by a downed power line that sparked. High winds are blamed for downing the line.|The fire jumped a road at one point, leading to evacuations of people as well as moving some livestock. Fire lines were dug at that point. One fire fighter was treated for mild smoke inhalation at the scene.

The remnants of Hurricane Ike resulted in tropical storm force winds which downed trees and power lines throughout all of De Soto Parish, Louisiana. Power outages were widespread as well with numerous residents without power during the height of the storm and days afterward. A tree was downed on the post office in Keatchie, Louisiana with other trees down on some homes in Mansfield, Louisiana. A power pole and transformer fell on a car in Mansfield as well.

An artic airmass spilled southward out of the central plains and into the lower Mississippi Valley. This cold surface airmass was overrun by a warm and humid airmass which combined with a strong upper level storm system across west Texas. The result was widespread freezing rain. Ice accumulations on average of one inch were common north and west of a line from Mansfield and Arcadia to Farmerville LA. An estimated 235,000 residents lost power from snapped power lines. Upwards of 29 transmission lines atop "H" shaped steel towers were snapped due to the weight of the ice. One man was killed and another injured when a tree limb laden with ice fell on them. Numerous traffic accidents were reported from ice covered roads and bridges. In the Shreveport - Bossier metroplex more than 205 streets were either blocked or partially blocked by limbs and fallen trees. Much of northwest Louisiana was declared a disaster area.

A strong upper level trough moved out of the southern Great Basin and into the Lower Mississippi Valley pulling Artic Air southward to the Gulf Coast. Moisture laden air from the Gulf of Mexico moved northward and overran freezing surface temperatures producing an ice storm across the region. Ice accumulations of one to four inches left upwards of 30,000 homes without power due to ice covered tree limbs which snapped and dropped powerlines. Bienville, Clariborne, Lincoln, Ouachita, Union and Webster parishes were declared disaster areas and became eligable for federal aid. Total area damage in these zones ran nearly 7 million dollars. Damage breakdown by individual Parish are not available through this source. Hundreds of chicken houses and carports collapsed from the weight of the ice and snow.

A backdoor cold front moved through extreme Northwest Louisiana during the overnight hours of June 5th and predawn hours of June 6th. Moderate instability was present ahead of the front and weak disturbances was moving across the region from the northwest. The result was scattered showers and thunderstorms, some of which downed trees and powerlines.

Strong south winds gusting upwards of 30 mph, combined with drought conditions across Northwest Louisiana and a downed powerline from the strong wind gusts resulted in a large forest fire in southern DeSoto Parish.
