Marysville Power Outages Caused by Weather

Events

June 11, 2022 - Tornado

Storm survey and storm chaser video and photos revealed a brief tornado just northeast of Marysville. This tornado did damage to a barn and power pole short path. The damage to a lumber shop south of highway 36 appears to have been related to a possible RFD surge south (straight line winds) and not this tornado.

Episodes

September 1, 2013

In the early morning hours of Sep 1 a line of thunderstorms moved through southeast Nebraska into far northeast Kansas. The line began to bow out along the state line, and this where strong winds made it to the surface. A few large trees, some small branches, and power poles were brought down due to the winds.

July 13, 2012

On the morning of July 13, 2012 scattered thunderstorms formed across northeast Kansas. None of these storms produced any severe weather, except one marginally strong updraft near Blue Rapids, that produced a downburst, and caused some tree limb damage and power outages in Blue Rapids.

November 16, 2009

A slow moving storm system produced 6 to 12 inches of heavy wet snow across parts of Northeast Kansas. The heaviest snow and greatest impact occurred along and north of a Concordia to Hiawatha line where numerous power outages due to downed power lines were reported. Very little in the way of snowfall accumulation occurred south of this line since air temperatures were in the lower to middle 30s and the significant accumulation occurred in areas of heavy precipitation while other areas that received snow saw it melt as it fell. Damage estimates of 1.6 million dollars included damage to power poles across Washington, Marshall, Republic and Cloud counties with the worst damage across Washington and Marshall Counties.

Power Outage FAQs

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
