Recent Weather Related Causes of Power Outages in Knox County

Winter Storm. Rain changed to snow near Penobscot Bay around midday on the 14th. While snow struggled to accumulate at lower elevations during the first half of the day, as the sun angle got lower in the afternoon snowfall rates became moderate to heavy at times. Snowfall also remained more persistent for the Midcoast into the evening, even after the dry slot rotated southwest across western Maine. Snowfall totals ranged from 9 to 12 inches that led to numerous downed branches and power outages.

March 14, 2023

High Wind. Parts of the Midcoast experienced two periods of strong to damaging winds. One during the morning hours of the 23rd generally had wind gusts in the 40 to 50 mph range. A second during the afternoon and evening featured wind gusts of 60 to 65 mph. Numerous trees and wires were reported down in the area, and power outages approached 30 percent of customers across the county.

December 23, 2022

High Wind. The strong winds came in two waves across coastal western Maine. The first period featured strong southeast winds gusting at times between 50 and 60 mph. A brief lull occurred as steady rain moved north of the area. However winds shifted to a more southerly direction and increased again as showers moved back into the region after midnight. Additional wind gusts between 40 and 60 mph occurred during this time. Despite trees having dropped their leaves there were numerous reports of trees and limbs down along with a significant number of power outages.

November 30, 2020

Tropical Storm. Tropical Storm Isaias brought limited impacts to Knox County due wind gusts around 40 mph. Isolated reports of snapped and uprooted trees along with broken branches caused downed power lines in sections of the county. Knox County reported 750 customers without power, with a restoration time for most outages within 24 hours. No coastal or inland flooding was reported.

August 04, 2020

High Wind. Strong wind gusts in the early morning hours of the 17th led to downed trees and power lines across Knox County. Local mesonet weather stations measured wind gusts ranging between 45 and 60 mph, including a 58 mph wind gust at Knox County Regional Airport. Across Maine nearly 200,000 power outages were reported.
