A powerful arctic front swept through the Mid-South during the afternoon and evening on December 22nd. Temperatures dropped as much as 20 degrees in the first hour after the frontal passage. As temperatures plummeted rain changed to sleet and snow and quickly accumulated on area roads. A flash freeze occurred which resulted in very hazardous driving across West Tennesee with numerous accidents.
A potent closed upper level low tracked across the region as a powerful cold front moved through the Mid-South. A large area of heavy winter precipitation developed across the Mid-South. Snow and sleet amounts ranged from 1 to 2 inches across southern West Tennessee to as much as 8 inches across parts of Northwest Tennessee.
Severe thunderstorms associated with a bow echo and separate Derecho caused widespread wind damage and a few marginally severe hail reports during the evening and overnight hours of May 27th. The storms severely impacted Shelby County. Winds downed over 480 trees across the county, with over 100 buildings damaged (many from falling trees). Over 180,000 people were without power. It took over a week for all power to be restored.
A potent late fall storm system brought strong southerly winds to portions of southeast Tennessee that knocked a few trees and power lines down during the early afternoon hours of November 28th.
A warm front was located across Southern Arkansas and Central Mississippi during the day on February 20th, 2015. Overrunning precipitation spread north of the front beginning in the morning. Since arctic air was already in place, the precipitation first fell in the form of sleet and snow. However, the sleet and snow quickly changed over to freezing rain. The freezing rain continued for the majority of the day into the evening before changing to rain during the early morning hours of February 21st, 2015. A quarter of an inch of ice fell across West Tennessee. In addition, less than an inch of snow and sleet accumulated. Roads became hazardous and numerous accidents occurred as a result. Two deaths and two injuries occurred from the car accidents. Some trees and power lines also fell producing power outages.
An arctic cold front pushed into the Mid-South during the day on March 2nd, 2014. Precipitation was slow to move out as the front stalled along the Interstate 40 corridor. Thunder occurred and heavy rain produced some flash flooding. The fast intruding airmass changed the rain to freezing rain, sleet and snow by the evening across much of West Tennessee. Major ice accumulations of a quarter to a half inch of ice occurred across Northwest Tennessee. Between two to five inches of sleet fell across the same area. Further south, along the Interstate 40 corridor, a sharp gradient occurred due to the location of the front. Temperatures dropped to 30-31 degrees immediately behind the front while just south of the front temperatures remained between 32-33 degrees. As a result, areas that dropped below freezing saw up to a quarter inch of ice and up to 3 inches of sleet. The areas that stayed 32 degrees saw only a trace up to a tenth of an inch of ice, sleet, or snow. This resulted in big differences between accumulations in some counties. For example, Shelby Forest in Northwest Shelby County received a quarter of an inch of ice and up to 2 inches of sleet while Germantown in Southeast Shelby County saw only trace amounts of ice in the trees. The winter precipitation tapered off during the early morning hours of March 3rd. The ice, sleet, and snow accumulations produced hazardous roads resulting in numerous accidents. Power lines and trees fell due to heavy ice accumulations as well resulting in major power outages. Some structural damage occurred such as roofs collapsing due to the weight of the ice and sleet.
A low pressure system tracked from the Gulf of Mexico to Northern Alabama during the day on February 4, 2014. Precipitation spread northward during the morning hours and since temperatures were already below freezing and stayed below freezing, the precipitation fell in the form of sleet or freezing rain. Some thunder occurred as well. A quarter of an inch up to around a half inch of ice fell in a corridor from Shelby Forest in Northwest Shelby County to Martin. The ice accumulations fell on top of what occurred two days prior in many locations. Trees and power lines fell as a result of the ice causing power outages. Roads were hazardous to travel and several accidents were reported. Meanwhile in areas where temperatures remained above freezing, training occurred across portions of West Tennessee as a band of moderate to heavy rain developed resulting in continuous rain over the same area. As a result, flash flooding occurred and several roads had to be closed.
An arctic cold front plunged into the Mid-South on February 2nd, 2014. The front stalled out as an area of low pressure developed along the front. As a result...precipitation continued for several hours across much of Northwest Tennessee as temperatures plunged below freezing. Precipitation fell in the form of freezing rain and sleet. Ice accumulations in excess of a quarter of an inch fell along a corridor from Shelby Forest in Northwest Shelby County to Union City. Some locations in Lauderdale, Dyer, and Obion Counties received as much as a half inch of ice. Trace amounts of sleet fell as well. Trees and power lines fell due to the ice accumulations. Roads became hazardous and numerous accidents occurred.
An arctic cold front pushed into Northwest Tennessee during the evening of December 5th, 2013. Widespread rain was already occurring, due to the combination of abundant mid-level moisture, an enhanced upper level jet and an upper level disturbance moving through the area. As a result of the cold front, temperatures plummeted and turned rain over to freezing rain and sleet across Northwest Tennessee. The wintry precipitation tapered off during the evening hours on December 6th, 2013. Total sleet amounts ranged from just a trace of sleet, roughly from a Memphis to Jackson line, to greater than one and a half inches across Lake County. Just southeast of the heavy sleet accumulations, a corridor of heavy ice accumulations occurred. The corridor, including locations such as Ripley, Dyersburg, Martin and Paris, received greater than a quarter inch of ice. South of this corridor, around a tenth of an inch of ice fell. The wintry precipitation created hazardous travel. However most of the accumulations occurred on trees, power lines, and elevated surfaces. As a result, a few trees and power lines fell due to the ice.
An upper level disturbance moved through the Mid-South January 15th into January 16th, 2013. Temperatures remained near or below freezing following another upper level disturbance that moved through on January 14th, 2013. As a result, precipitation from the disturbance that moved through on January 15th and 16th fell predominately in the form of freezing rain. Ice accumulations of a tenth to a quarter inch fell in many locations. However, most of the accumulations occurred on trees and power lines. Some of which were knocked down. Roads remained wet due to warm ground temperatures. Only bridges and overpasses became iced over due to them being elevated. In addition, colder air filtered into extreme Northwest Tennessee as the disturbance pushed east. This allowed freezing rain to change over to snow briefly before ending. Snow accumulations up to an inch occurred across Lake County. Some roads became snow covered as a result producing hazardous travel. One car accident occurred which produced one minor injury.
A powerful upper level low pressure system tracked across the Mid-South into the Ohio Valley the night of December 25th, 2012 into the morning of December 26th, 2012. The system brought snow and gusty winds to much of West Tennessee. Snow accumulations ranged from one to four inches across extreme West Tennessee, mainly northwest of a Bartlett to Martin, Tennessee line. The gusty winds knocked down trees and power lines. Roads were hazardous and a few accidents occurred as a result. One fatality occurred from icy roads.
A powerful Mesoscale Convective system developed over Missouri during the morning hours of June 11, 2012. The complex moved southeast into the Mid-South during the afternoon and early evening resulting in numerous reports of damaging winds. There were also a few reports of large hail and flash flooding.
Strong high pressure quickly built into the Mid-South behind a strong area of low pressure located over the Ohio Valley during the afternoon hours on February 1st, 2011. Strong gradient winds occurred across the area as a result. Trees and power lines were knocked down and roof damage occurred to a few buildings across West Tennessee.
A cold front moved through the Mid-South during the early morning hours of October 26th, 2010. Strong gradient winds occurred ahead of the front which caused some trees and power lines to fall. Meanwhile, a couple of severe thunderstorms developed along the front. The storms produced damaging winds.
The Mid-South had a favorable set-up for winter weather during the time frame of January 28th-January 30th, 2010. A cold front moved through the area on January 27th allowing cold arctic air to filter into the region behind the front. Meanwhile, a powerful low pressure system developed over the Southwestern United States. The system pushed east into Texas and eventually in the Lower Mississippi Valley bringing abundant moisture to the area. Precipitation, mainly in the form of freezing rain, began over Northeast Arkansas and the Missouri Bootheel during the late evening hours of January 28th. The precipitation spread east during the morning of January 29th and became heavier producing a wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet and snow over much of the Mid-South with the exception of extreme southern portions of the Mid-South. As the air cooled further, precipitation switched to all snow. However, temperatures began to warm during the afternoon and evening hours changing precipitation back to freezing rain, sleet or just rain. Precipitation tapered off to freezing drizzle or flurries by the early morning hours of January 30th. The winter weather produced treacherous roads which caused many accidents. In addition, accumulations of ice produced numerous downed trees and power lines resulting in many power outages. Snow accumulations ranged from an inch across Southwest Tennessee to eight inches across Northwest Tennessee. Ice accumulations ranged from a trace across Northwest Tennessee to up to an inch across the southern tier of counties in West Tennessee.
A strong low pressure system moved northeast from Southern Missouri during the day on February 11, 2009. As the low pressure system moved northeast, a trailing cold front pushed east across the area. Strong gradient winds behind the cold front knocked down numerous trees and power lines. Other minor roof and sign damage occurred as well.

Power Outage FAQs
What is Power Outage?
Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.
What Causes Power Outages?
- Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
- Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
- Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.
What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?
- Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
- Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
- Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
- Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
