Middletown Power Outages Caused by Weather
Events
Two trees down on Fostertown Road near Route 9W. Three intersections with no power along Route 9W.
Numerous trees down into wires, almost entire city without power.
A peak wind gust of 51 mph was recorded at the Stewart Airport AWOS at 420pm LST, 50 mph at the NYC mesonet station in Warwick at 110 pm LST, and a 45 mph wind gust at the Montgomery Airport AWOS at 346 pm LST. In addition, 1 to 5 inches of rainfall, highest west, were recorded across the county. These type of winds and saturated grounds across the county resulted in numerous trees and tree limbs being downed, power outages, damages to homes and automobiles, and disruption to transit.
Trained spotters, CoCoRaHS, and the public reported 4 to 6 inches of snow. A trained spotter also reported 0.4 inches of ice accretion in Newburgh, and the Montgomery Airport ASOS reported 0.27 inches of ice accretion. The combination of snow and ice created hazardous travel conditions along with downed tree limbs and power lines.
Trained spotters reported 1 to 2 feet of snow across the county. The highest totals were in Monroe and Highland Mills with 26.0 and 24.3 inches respectively. The heavy wet snow combined with gusty winds to bring down tree limbs and some power lines.
Episodes
Deepening low pressure tracking from the southeast United States on Saturday January 19, 2019 to the northeast on Sunday January 20, 2019. An arctic air mass was located across New England as the storm system approached the region. A warm front associated with the low moved north along the coast early on the morning of January 20 changing moderate to locally heavy snow to sleet and then liquid precipitation. The warmer air battled the arctic air advecting into the Lower Hudson Valley from the north. However, temperatures remained below freezing through much of the winter storm across the Lower Hudson Valley creating a significant ice accretion on top of snow accumulation. Trees and power lines were brought down due to the ice along with power outages across many towns.
Low pressure over the eastern Gulf of Mexico on the evening of December 10, tracked northeast and up into the Carolinas by the following evening of December 11. In response to a strong upper trough approaching from the west, a secondary low developed along the Mid Atlantic coast during the evening and rapidly deepened overnight. By the following morning, the low had deepened to an estimated 994 mb, just to the south and east of Montauk Point. A transient high over eastern Canada provided enough cold air across northern portions of the Lower Hudson Valley for a prolonged period of freezing rain during the late morning hours of December 11 through the early morning hours of December 12. Thereafter, enough warm air worked in for a complete changeover to rain with several inches of rainfall.||Automated observations in tandem with pictures from trained spotters supported ice accumulations around one half inch across the northern half of Orange county. ||At 0800EST, there was a major automobile accident on the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge in Orange County with eight injuries. There were also scattered reports of trees and power lines down with the American Red Cross opening a shelter in Central Valley the following day.
Severe thunderstorms produced high winds that downed many trees and power lines throughout Putnam County, about 5 miles northeast of Jamaica, Queens, in Tottenville on Staten Island, and in Bay Ridge in Brooklyn.
A spotter reported that severe thunderstorm winds knocked numerous trees down in Ridgebury, Warwick, Goshen, and Newburgh. This resulted in downed power lines and an interruption in service for about 36,000 electricity customers. In Mongaup Valley, a 50 foot pine tree was snapped in two and fell across a yard.
As a line of thunderstorms swept east across the region, scattered severe thunderstorms produced high winds that downed many trees onto power lines at several locations including Greenville, Middletown, and Warwick.
