Recent Weather Related Causes of Power Outages in Rice County

Thunderstorm Wind. There was significant wind damage from a downburst that expanded in width as it traveled northeast. By the time it stopped producing damage, it was 8 wide on either side of Nerstrand. The damage began east-southeast of Morristown (near the Rice, Waseca, and Steele County line), moved across the south side of Faribault, and northeast to near the Nerstrand Big Woods State Park and then Nerstrand. The damage path became more isolated as it exited eastern Rice county.||Numerous trees, power lines, roofs, and pole barns were damaged along this path. In addition, nine semi trucks were blown over on I-35 south of Faribault due to straight-line winds. Just over $1 Million dollars in damages were to public infrastructure, with remaining damages to houses, farms, and vehicles.

Thunderstorm Wind. A NWS storm survey, plus areal footage of drone and satellite data, concluded that damaging downburst winds, up to 80 mph, occurred from west and north of Wells Lake. Damage was consistent with all the damage directed from southwest to northeast, and related to uprooted trees and power lines.

Thunderstorm Wind. A NWS storm survey and drone footage concluded that a broad area of downburst and inflow winds occurred south of Northfield, near the intersection of Cannon City Blvd, and 147th Street East, then northeast to the intersection of Hall Ave, and 135th Street East. There was no definite path of damage but more widespread uprooted trees, power lines, and a few outbuildings and silos.

Thunderstorm Wind. A NWS storm survey, plus areal footage of drone and satellite data, concluded that there was sporadic downburst and inflow wind damage from south of Northfield, east and northeast to the Rice, Goodhue county line, west of Stanton. ||There was no definite path of damage but more widespread uprooted trees, power lines, and destroyed outbuildings and silos. The worst damage occurred to a farm near the intersection of 90th Street East, and Kellogg Ave. Two large silos and outbuildings were either blown over, or destroyed. The damage is consistent with wind gusts of 110 mph. Other damage was associated with flattened corn and soy bean fields.

Tornado. A NWS storm survey, plus areal footage of drone and satellite data, concluded that an EF1 tornado tracked for 5.8 miles, from near the intersection of 150th Street West, and Bagley Ave, or 2.6 miles north of the Faribault airport, northeast to just south of Dundas. ||This tornado tracked mainly through corn and soy bean fields, and occasionally damaging a power pole. One electrical transmission line was blown down near the end of the tornado track which is consistent of 90 mph wind gusts. The largest path width was 440 yards.
