Moab Power Outages Caused by Weather
Events
Collapsing thunderstorms brought strong wind gusts estimated at 75 mph to Moab resulting in trees being blown over and damage to power lines near city hall.
Heavy rainfall resulted in flash flood waters at least a foot deep which ran down several drainages from the east side of the valley and across Highway 191 into a southern section of Moab. A flood control dam in one of the drainages was destroyed by the flash flooding after it was overtopped. Power House Dam Road was closed due to flood damage and some houses on Holyoak Lane and a couple of businesses incurred some flood damage. The flash flooding deposited a large amount of debris on roads. Rainfall measurements in the southeast area of Moab were up to 0.96 of an inch within about a half hour.
Lightning struck and damaged a power pole south of Kerby Lane on the south side of Moab. This started a grass fire that was quickly suppressed.
Episodes
Strong thunderstorm winds lowered visibilities to near zero in blowing dust at the Canyonlands Airport. The strong winds also picked up debris from a trash pile west of the airport and sent sheets of metal and other objects sailing over the airport. A lightning strike knocked out power to the ASOS equipment shortly before the winds hit the airport. Therefore, the winds were estimated.
