Episodes
A strong wake low or gravity wave moved across central Alabama during the overnight hours. This feature occurred toward the very tail end of a rain area and continued after the rain had ended in most locations. This feature moved rather slow and allowed the gusty winds to last for a few hours. Gusty winds up to 30 miles an hour accompanied the feature across western Alabama and intensified just after midnight local time. As the feature moved along and south of Interstate 20 and east of Interstate 65, the highest wind gusts were estimated around 50 miles an hour. Several trees and power lines were blown down in each of the counties listed, but most of the counties acrosscentral Alabama experienced wind gusts at least 30 miles an hour. The most significant damage occurred in Talladega, Coosa,and Elmore Counties. Some of the fallen trees landed on homes and caused additional damage. The fallen trees and branches produced power outages in several locations. A supercell thunderstorm moved across Montgomery County and affected the Montgomery metropolitan area. Numerous reports of funnel clouds were received but no tornadoes were confirmed in the county. The storm produced a swath of hail through the area and many vehicles were damaged. The largest observed hail was baseball size. The most concentrated wind damage occurred just south of Vaughan Road along Ray Thorington Road. Thirteen large power poles were broken and knocked over. Elsewhere along the path, a few trees were blown down.
Hundreds of trees and power lines were snapped off or blown down during Ivan. At least 3300 homes sustained varying degrees of wind damage. Power was not fully restored for at least a week. Maximum wind gusts were estimated around 75 miles an hour. Three women in Montgomery were killed due to carbon monoxide poisoning after Ivan. The women had a generator running in their home because the power was out of service.
Several trees were uprooted and fell on vehicles in downtown Montgomery. Quarter size hail was reported with this storm. Numerous customers were temporarily without power during the storm. A funnel cloud was observed in downtown Montgomery associated with this storm.
South central Alabama received four to eight inches of rain in a short period of time. The heavy rainfall caused significant flooding in Autauga, Elmore, and Montgomery Counties. One of the hardest hit areas was Prattville. Emergency Management officials estimated at least 100 homes were damaged and a dozen received major damage. Many residents of the Candlestick Mobile Home Park were rescued by boat and 70 additional residents were evacuated. Approximately 20 businesses also sustained damage. Numerous roads in all three counties were flooded and subsequently closed. Several schools were closed for the day. Frequent lightning also accompanied the heavy rain. The lightning caused power outages that affected several thousand customers. A few small fires were also reported but no one was injured.
