Power Outage in Monticello, IN

After impacting Benton County, the tornado continued into White county. Damage consisted primarily of downed trees, power poles, and damaged farm outbuildings. However there were several homes damaged, two significantly.

White County airport reported a 49 mph wind gust 9 AM. Frequent gusts of 40 to 50 mph from west and northwest were observed into the early afternoon. These wind gusts resulted in instances of tree damage and subsequent power outages.

Periods of freezing rain with temperatures near freezing accumulated to between 0.10 and 0.20 across the area on New Year's Day, mainly during the morning and early afternoon hours. This led to a few reports of tree limbs down and spotty power outages across the region. There were also reports of a few car accidents as roads were slick in spots.

The public reported a power line was blown down at County Road 500 North and 700 East.

Long duration sustained winds of 35 to 45 mph with gusts 50 to 55 mph occurred across the county, resulting in trees, tree limbs and power poles suffering damage.

Damage patterns within a 6 miles swath indicate a tornado was likely skipping along its track. Touchdown occurred south of US-24 between South County Road 600 West and 500 West where a barn was destroyed with debris being carried several miles to the northeast. The tornado remained over mainly open fields until pushing over several steel power poles at their base east of the intersection of US-24 and South County Road 500 West. A large pole barn suffered moderate rood damage as winds entered a gap on the bottom of the structure. A home suffered minor roof damage near the intersection of West County Road 100 North and North County Road 300 West. Other damage was found northeast of this location, but was inconclusive as to whether it was the result of tornadic winds. Maximum winds are estimated at 85 mph.

Healthy trees fell on power lines. In addition, numerous tree branches of unknown size were down.

Light snow developed during the late evening hours of January 31st and became heavy at times February 1st into early February 2nd. Total snow accumulations across the county generally ranged between 6 and 9 inches, heaviest across northern portions of the county. Wind gusts of 15 to 25 mph, combined with the falling snow, created reduced visibilities and blowing snow. Numerous events were cancelled across the region, along with reports of slide-offs and accidents due to snow covered and slick roads. The heavy, wet, nature of the snow also led to sporadic power outages.

Temperatures dropped into the single digits and teens below zero as arctic air filtered in behind a powerful winter storm that dropped more than a foot of heavy snow on the region. Strong westerly winds, with gusts between 30 and 40 mph, created deadly wind chills and significant blowing and drifting snow. Dangerous winds chills between 30 and 45 degrees below zero were common. The extremely cold temperatures and significant blowing snow kept many north-south roads impassable or restricted to single lanes. There were numerous reports of accidents and slide-offs across the region due to the slick roadways, with many businesses and schools closed each day.

The tornado touched down in an open field 4 miles west of Chalmers, northwest of the intersection of County Road 600 South and 450 West. The tornado crossed County Road 300 West, south of County Road 500 South where four 18 inch diameter power poles were snapped at the base (DI: ETL DOD: 4). Minor damage to siding and roofing was also observed at a home northeast of this location. A large pole barn in the same yard lost half of its roof while a barn next door to this residence was destroyed (DI: SBO DOD: 8) with debris from both locations being carried up to a mile to the northeast. One final barn suffered minor roof damage before the tornado lifted two miles north of Chalmers east of County Road 75 West and south of County Road 350 S. Maximum wind speeds were estimated around 120 mph.

A survey of damage by NWS officials indicated that a tornado touched down in eastern Benton county and continued northeast into White county, likely reaching a peak intensity of EF2. Exact determination of maximum intensity was difficult due to vastly open country and lack of trees and other objects. The tornado moved into southwestern White county south of County Road 1200 South, where the garage door of a west facing pole barn was pushed in and some minor tree limb damage was noted. The tornado continued rapidly northeast and impacted a residence on 900 West where the chimney (above the roof) was knocked down with shingle damage noted to the home. In addition, a large propane tank and camper were rolled or pushed roughly 150 feet away with the camper being destroyed. The tornado moved into open fields where it remained for roughly four miles, crossing Interstate 65 between mile markers 188 and 190. The tornado briefly strengthened after crossing the interstate, snapping 10 18-24 inch diameter power poles (DI: ETL DOD: 4) at the ground along County Road 500 West, either side of State Route 18. A home on the intersection of these roads suffered minor window and roof damage. Just east of the intersection, a pole barn was destroyed (DI: SBO DOD: 8) with debris thrown upwards of three-quarters of a mile. The tornado finally lifted west of County Road 300 West and north of State Route 18. The tornado was on the ground for a combined distance of 12 miles from eastern Benton county into White county. A maximum width of roughly 1200 yards was determined with maximum wind speeds around 120 mph.

A review of radar data and damage details near the southwestern White county tornado revealed a separate tornado, which also reached EF2 intensity, occurred roughly 10 minutes behind the first tornado. The tornado touched down west of County Road 1100 West and north of the White/Tippecanoe county line where it impacted a farm, destroying two barns (one large and one small) with debris being thrown more than a half mile away from the location. In addition, several healthy pine trees lost branches with a few being snapped at the trunk and then launched or dragged several hundred feet to the east. The tornado moved northeast and impacted a residence on US 231, south of County Road 1200 South. The entire roof of a one story home (DI: FR12 DOD: 6) was removed and thrown northeast into a field. Two by four boards were driven into the field up to 250 yards away. The tornado eventually crossed Interstate 65 hitting yet another farm with extensive barn and shed damage on County Road 500 West, south of State Route 18. Power pole damage was noted in this area as well, but was not clear if this was from the prior tornado just to the north. Northeast of this location, it appears that the tornado quickly dissipated or became harder to detect based on the earlier damage. Maximum winds are estimated at 120 mph.

Moderate rain overspread the region on February 26th. Surface temperatures hovered near freezing during the morning hours which allowed the rain to freeze on mainly elevated surfaces. Ice accretions near a tenth of an inch were common on trees, power lines, bridges, and overpasses. This combined with wind gusts to 30 mph aided in downing a few tree limbs. There were also reports of isolated power outages and accidents across the region.

Numerous tree limbs were reported down in the area, mainly striking power lines. A tree was uprooted and blown down onto a home in the Bedford Bay area.

Very windy conditions were seen across the area on December 9th as a deep area of low pressure tracked into Michigan. Wind gusts between 45 and 60 mph were common during the late morning and afternoon hours. There were reports of power lines and trees down across the region due to the strong winds, which resulted in isolated power outages.

Mixed wintry precipitation overspread the area late December 18th and continued through about 07:00 am on December 19th. Precipitation started out as a brief period of snow and sleet before changing over to moderate freezing rain. The area picked up a quarter of an inch or more of ice accumulation, with a report of a quarter of an inch 5 miles west of Chalmers. Utility companies and the local newspaper reported over 6,000 power outages across White County due to ice accumulation on trees and power lines. There were numerous reports of slide-offs and accidents across the region.

Numerous trees, tree limbs, power lines and poles were blown down across the county. At least one gustnado was sighted by a county sheriff deputy. It touched down in an open field and then lifted without damage. Two large trees fell onto a residence on Ireland St in Monticello causing some roof damage, but luckily no injuries to those home at the time eating supper.

Two to four tenths of an inch of ice covered roads and power lines, creating hazardous driving conditions and widespread power outages, including in Brookston, Wolcott and Monticello. No injuries or deaths were reported in the county.

Extensive tree and power line damage reported in town with electric and telephone service out to much of the town.

A significant ice storm affected portions of northern and central Indiana beginning early on the 5th of January and continuing into the 6th. Locations generally along and south of a Francesville to Fort Wayne line experienced ice accumulations ranging from a quarter inch to nearly 2 inches. Numerous reports of trees, tree limbs and power lines knocked down were received. The damage, combined with many areas of power outages and dangerous driving conditions forced schools in the area to close, with some remaining closed for several days as cleanup continued. Some locations were without power for nearly a week after the storm. The hardest hit counties were Grant, Jay and Blackford where 1.5 to 2 inches of ice accumulated, resulting in power loss to nearly 80 percent of all property in each county. One death, indirectly related to the storm, was reported in Adams county. A 44 year old man was found dead as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning. The gentleman was running a generator in his garage as a result of the power outage. Another resident of the home was not affected by the carbon monoxide. An injury was reported in Portland in Jay county. A firefighter was injured when a tree branch fell onto his head. The branch cracked the helmet and face mask and cut his face.

An intense area of low pressure moving across Michigan produced sustained winds of 40 MPH with measured gusts to 60 MPH across all of Northern Indiana, Northwest Ohio and Southwest Lower Michigan from late morning through early evening. Widespread reports of trees and power lines downwere received from law enforcement across the region.

Winds gusted to 65 MPH behind a strong cold front that moved across the region during the late afternoon and evening. Numerous power outages occurred with trees and power lines down. Damage was reported to some roofs with extensive damage to the Knox City Court Building in Starke County.

An unusually strong cold front moved through the region during the daylight hours of the 9th. A strong pressure gradient existed with the front as 3 hour pressure falls of 4 millibars ahead of the front combined with 3 hour pressure rises of 11 millibars. Winds just above the surface ranged from 70 to 80 mph. The combination of these 2 factors was tapped by a narrow line of showers immediately ahead of the cold front. Widespread reports of trees, tree limbs and power lines being blown down were received as surface winds of 50 to 70 mph were experienced by many areas.
