Episodes

November 30, 2018

A vigorous upper level trough moved into the Southern Plains during the late afternoon, evening and overnight hours of November 30th-December 1st. Upper level forcing in response to this disturbance moved into the Middle Red River Valley of Northeast Texas, Southeast Oklahoma and Southwest Arkansas during the evening hours of November 30th and strong to severe thunderstorms erupted north and west of the Interstate 30 Corridor as a result. The atmosphere was moderately unstable for the last day in November but strong deep layer and low level directional shear were present. This resulted in supercell type thunderstorms and bowing thunderstorm complexes, one of which moved across Northeast Texas into Southeast Oklahoma and Southwest Arkansas producing widespread wind damage all along its track. Numerous trees and power lines were downed with these storms before they exited Northeast Texas during the early morning hours of December 1st.

Power outage on Green Fish Hill? Been out an hour. Second time in as many days....

I watched the tree split in two, fall on a wire and watched the transformer spark, make a loud popping sound and most of the Fleetwood section of Mt Vernon go dark at 1pm, it’s now 1am, everyone’s apartments are like Suanas and only going to get worse. It’s 1am, 12 hours later and while a few coned trucks have driven past, nobody has moved a muscle to fix home bound people who are still working and schooling from home. Con Ed only says they know their is a problem but has no time table for repair. Customer service At it’s worst!

My kids have summer school and without the internet they’ll be failing, so I’m asking kindly to fix the problem cuz south eleventh is the only block without power. And multiple trucks passed by us today and fixed every where else

Power Outage FAQs

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
