Nantucket Power Outages Caused by Weather
Events
Winds gusted as high as 78 mph on Nantucket but no significant damage was reported. Sustained winds peaked at 55 mph according to the Automated Surface Observing System at the airport. A combination of wind, freezing spray, and heavy snow knocked out power to all of Nantucket. In addition, communication systems (including cell phone service) were also out.
Blizzard conditions occurred at Nantucket Memorial Airport from approximately 6 am to 5 pm. Even outside this time frame, near blizzard conditions occurred with strong gusty winds and limited visibilities. Approximately a foot of snow fell on Nantucket Island. Due to power outages to most, if not all of Nantucket Island, 86 people stayed the night in a Red Cross Shelter set up at Nantucket High School.
The Automated Surface Observing Systems at Nantucket Memorial Airport (KACK) recorded visibilities at or below one quarter mile and frequent wind gusts over 35 mph and as high as 82 mph at the peak of the blizzard conditions. Sustained winds were also very strong with the ASOS at KACK recording sustained wind speeds of 56 mph. The strongest winds occurred coincident with the blizzard conditions, though gustier winds lasted a couple of hours longer than the snow did. Snowfall amounts were highest on Nantucket with 8-10 inches reported. A large branch was downed onto Highland Avenue, blocking the road. Several large branches were downed on the east end of Nantucket Island. Wires were downed, resulting in 1200 customers without power. Milestone Road was blocked by multiple downed trees as well as snow drifts.
The Automated Surface Observing System at Nantucket Memorial Field (KACK) measured sustained wind speeds of 47 mph. A power pole split in half at the intersection of West Dover and Union Streets.
Episodes
A strong coastal storm moved up the east coast and over Nantucket bringing a heavy wet snow to much of the area. This resulted in tree damage and scattered power outages across the region.
Damaging winds affected many locations in Massachusetts, as strengthening low pressure tracked across northern New England and a strong cold front pushed through the region. There were many reports of downed trees and power lines, especially across the higher elevations.
