Recent Weather Related Causes of Power Outages in Stokes County

Remnants of Hurricane Ian moved north-northwest from the South Carolina coast into northwest North Carolina. Ian was classified as a post-tropical system by the time it reached central and northwest North Carolina during the late hours of September 30th, 2022. Strong low level shear and abundant tropical moisture brought strong winds to much of the area, resulting in thousands of power outages and many downed trees. The remnants of Ian continued to impact the area overnight through the morning hours of October 1, 2022.

October 01, 2022

Strong Wind. Numerous trees and a few power lines were downed by non-thunderstorm winds from the remnants of Ian throughout Stokes County, especially along N.C. Road 65. Several houses sustained damage from downed trees and limbs. An estimated 6,173 residents lost power. Non-thunderstorm winds from the remnants of Ian continued to impact the area overnight through the morning hours of October 1, 2022.

Thunderstorm Wind. Thunderstorm winds blew down power poles and large tree limbs. Storm report via mPING.

Strong Wind. Several trees were blown down in the Lawsonville area, and a power line was blown down near the intersection of NC Highway 89 and Asbury Road near Francisco. This downed line helped start a small brush fire. Damage values are estimated.

March 07, 2022

Winter Storm. A Skywarn-trained weather spotter and members of the general public observed widespread ice accumulations from freezing rain ranging from 0.25 to 0.3 inches in thickness across portions of Stokes County, including around the communities of Lawsonville, Capella, Collinstown and King. The icing resulted in at least 922 known new power outages within the county, though some were still without power from the previous winter storm less than a week earlier. Key impacts: power outages; hazardous travel conditions; tree damage; schools closed.
