Recent Weather Related Causes of Power Outages in Boyd County

Blizzard. A Cooperative observer located in Butte reported 10.3 inches of snowfall. Whiteout conditions with zero visibility developed by early Friday evening. Some customers were also without power Friday night into Saturday. Total snowfall amounts of 9 to 11 inches were reported across Boyd County. Moderate to heavy snow developed late Friday afternoon as northwest winds increased to 30 to 40 mph with gusts as high as 50 to 60 mph at times, resulting in blizzard conditions by early evening. These strong winds and blizzard conditions continued Friday night into Saturday afternoon, then diminished Saturday evening. Highways 12 and 281, and other area roads became closed or very difficult to travel by Friday night into Saturday. Snow drifts of 3 to 7 feet were reported throughout Boyd County.

April 13, 2018

Winter Storm. Cooperative observer and general public reported a half to three quarters of an inch of freezing rain. This caused some tree damage and power outages. This was followed by heavy snowfall of 2 to 4 inches across Boyd County. North winds of 20 to 30 mph caused low visibilities and some drifting snow.

Flood. Thunderstorms with prolonged rain falling on already saturated ground caused widespread minor flooding along Ponca Creek in Boyd County. Power poles toppled due to errosion along the river bank. In addition, numerous rural roads were damaged due to the rain and flooding.

June 12, 2010

Winter Storm. Winter storm conditions occurred across Boyd County during the afternoon and evening hours on January 6th, 2010, as strong northwest winds of 30 to 40 mph and gusty combined with falling snow. Snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches were reported. Visibilities were reduced as low as a quarter mile at times and many primary and secondary roads were closed by late afternoon and early evening. Although the snow ended by early evening, strong northwest winds persisted overnight to cause continued blowing and drifting snow and reduced visibility. Some power outages were also reported.

Blizzard. Blizzard conditions began across Boyd County by 3pm CST on April 4th. Snowfall amounts of 10 to 12 inches occurred with strong north winds of 30 to 45 mph causing drifting snow and near zero visibility during the late afternoon and overnight hours. Snow drifts of up to 8 feet closed roads. Power outages were also common.
