Power Outage in Neodesha, KS

Freezing rain fell across the county. Ice accumulation ranged from a tenth to just over a quarter of an inch. Some power lines were reported down.

A microburst caused major damage along Tank Ave. between 4th and 8th streets. Trees were uprooted and power poles were snapped off.

Around 0.25 inch of glaze accumulated on trees and power lines 5 miles north of Altoona. Road surfaces were beginning to freeze.

In Fredonia, the dispatcher reported that roads and highways were ice rinks. There was damage to trees of unknown sizes along with reportedly downed power lines. Vehicles slid off roads and highways across the county along with some power outages.

A few power poles were knocked down along 4th Street knocking out power to Neodesha. This power outage left 3500 people without power for most of the day.

A wintry mix of rain, freezing rain and sleet affected the county from the morning hours on the 27th into the morning hours on the 28th. The wintry mix eventually changed over to snow during the mid to late morning and persisted into the afternoon hours on the 28th. Widespread ice accumulations ranged from one-quarter to three-quarters of an inch, highest across northwest portions of the county. Total snow accumulations on top of the ice ranged from 1 to 5 inches, highest over east and southeast portions of the county. Stout north to northeast winds resulted in reduced visibilities in falling and blowing snow. The weight of the ice in concert with the stout winds downed numerous tree limbs and some power poles and power lines, causing widespread power outages. A power line was blown down in Altoona due to high winds.

During the night of the 10th and 11th, a late season winter storm produced a narrow swath of 6 to 8 inch snowfalls across extreme southeast Kansas. Possessing a high water content, the heavy snow caused widespread damage to trees, power lines and about 30 power poles. Approximately 2,600 to 2,700 people experienced power outages lasting the duration of the weekend. In addition to reports from trained AGTAP spotters, reports were also received from the co-operative observer network and area newspapers.

A powerful cold front surged southeast across the area during the evening hours of October 30th. Strong to severe elevated thunderstorms developed behind the cold front across Southeast Kansas during the late evening hours, as a potent upper level disturbance approached from the west.
