Episodes
A powerful cold front produced numerous severe thunderstorms across Connecticut, Long Island and the Lower Hudson Valley of New York.
Strong thunderstorms developed in an unstable environment ahead of an advancing cold front. As they swept across the state of Connecticut, they caused wind damage, flash flooding, as well as frequent lightning. Connecticut light and power reported that about 30,000 customers lost power across the state. Wind damage was also reported in Franklin.
On Tuesday, August 28th, a cold front moved southeast across southern Connecticut. A line of strong thunderstorms developed ahead of this cold front, and moved southeast across portions of southern Connecticut during the late afternoon and early evening hours. As the thunderstorms moved southeast into New Haven County, a "line echo wave pattern" developed within the line, accompanied by an enhanced area of severe thunderstorms. The line of thunderstorms then dissipated as it moved further east across southern Connecticut. In New Haven County, strong wind gusts of 60 mph or slightly higher toppled numerous large trees and tree limbs, and resulted in many power outages. In Guilford, a wind gust of 53 mph was measured by a storm spotter. In addition, some of the thunderstorms were accompanied by pea- to dime-size hail, particularly near West Haven.
On Sunday, July 1st, a strong cold front approached southern Connecticut from the northwest during the late afternoon hours. As this front clashed with a warm, moist and very unstable air mass already in place, strong to locally severe thunderstorms developed and moved east-southeast across portions of southern Connecticut. Damaging winds in excess of 50 mph caused numerous large trees to topple, and led to widespread power outages. Fallen trees also caused several road closures. These thunderstorms were also accompanied by frequent cloud to ground lightning strikes. At the River Dale Campgrounds in Clinton, lightning struck a 14 year-old female from Deep River and a 17 year-old male from Clinton. Both were taken to the Middlesex Medical Center Shoreline Hospital in Essex, where their injuries were treated.
During Monday evening, June 11th, a surface trough moved east across southern New England, propelled by a potent disturbance in the middle and upper levels of the atmosphere. This triggered clusters of strong to locally severe thunderstorms across portions of southern Connecticut Monday evening into the early morning hours of Tuesday June 12th. Damaging winds downed trees and power lines across portions of southern Connecticut, and heavy rains caused areas of flooding on roadways and in low-lying areas. In addition, numerous cloud to ground lightning strikes accompanied these storms, causing numerous power outages across southern Connecticut, particularly from Norwich to New London. In Middlesex County, lightning struck the chimney of a home on Harvard Court in Middletown, and tore a hole in the roof. Cost estimates of the property damage were unknown.
