New Hope Power Outages Caused by Weather

Events

July 27, 2008 - Lightning

A series of lightning strikes caused a couple of house fires and other damage across central Bucks County. One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion. In Hilltown, a home on Paige Trail was struck by lightning on its roof. Smoke spewed from the garage section of the home. Firefighters removed a three foot by three foot section of the roof to help battle the blaze. Five fire companies assisted. The fire was contained to the attic and the second floor master bedroom of the house. In Solebury Township, the chimney of a house on Brighton Way was struck by lightning. The lightning traveled down into the basement where a fire was ignited. Four fire companies battled the blaze for two and a half hours. The fire was contained to one area of the house, but caused heavy smoke damage throughout. The house was expected to be uninhabitable for a few days. Also in Solebury Township, a lightning strike caused a transformer fire. In Warrington Township, another lightning strike damaged a home's chimney. In New Britain Township, lightning struck a PECO Energy substation. U.S. Route 202 was closed as firefighters battled the blaze. One firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion. The combination of damaging winds and lightning strikes caused about 30,000 homes and businesses to lose power in Bucks and Montgomery Counties.

In evaluating a challenge to an abortion ban under the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, a court must realize that any attempt to find a non-religious justification such as “potential life” for such a ban has at best a merely rational basis in asserting that potential human life has some value but no rational basis—let alone a compelling interest—in asserting a particular value that outweighs the interest in protecting religious observance.

Power Outage FAQs

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
