North Sioux City Power Outages Caused by Weather
Events
Thunderstorm winds snapped off a single power pole. Property damage costs are rough estimates.
Ice accumulated to a quarter to half inch across the northern portions of Union County. Areas near Beresford and Alcester reported a quarter to half inch of ice accumulation, and as winds increased during the overnight and early day on April 11, scattered power outages resulted as stress from ice accumulation took down power lines. Snowfall toward the end of the storm was minimal, from a trace to 2 inches. Property damage costs include damage to utilities.
Freezing rain of one to two tenths of an inch caused icy roads, and accumulated on trees, power lines, and other surfaces. Around 0.20 inch of icing was reported at South Sioux City. Law enforcement agencies reported a few vehicles accidents on the ice, but no known injuries, with traffic being light because of the holiday, business closings, and activity cancellations. Light winds prevented significant damage to trees and power lines.
High winds from a westerly direction followed a low pressure system which had brought Christmas Day rain and thunderstorms. There were reports of power lines and branches down with resulting power outages, and traffic lights damaged. Sustained winds over 40 mph and gusts over 55 mph were estimated by law enforcement.
