A weak to moderate atmospheric river event impacted the SF Bay Area November 8th and November 9th, bringing moderate to locally heavy rain and gusty winds. A low pressure system from the Gulf of Alaska deepened over the NE Pacific and made landfall in the OR/WA area November 8th. This system tapped into subtropical moisture from the Pacific Ocean and dropped substantial rainfall over the North Bay and into the immediate Bay Area, with accumulations up to 4 inches in coastal North Bay. A strong low-level jet also developed off the coast, bringing gusty winds in excess of 30-40 mph to the Bay Area. Several reports of roadway flooding were received, along with some downed powerlines and trees. Monterey OEM also reported a mudflow on the River Fire burn scar, which forced a road closure.

March 22, 2018

A series of storm systems with a subtropical moisture stream swept through the region between the 20th and 22nd of March. This subtropical moisture was also associated with an upper level trough and surface cold front. These systems resulted in minor roadway flooding and debris flows as well as downed trees and power outages due to gusty winds.

December 15, 2016

A slow moving cold front moved through the San Francisco Bay Area and Monterey Bay Area on Thursday, December 15, 2016. The front moved through the area slowly, producing moderate to locally heavy rain for several hours which resulted in nuerous reports of flooding, especially for the Northern San Francisco Bay Area. Also, this storm system produced locally strong winds with gusts greater than 50 mph. These winds brough down drought-stressed trees which damaged power lines and cares.

November 1, 2008

A warm winter storm brought heavy rain to Northern and Central California inducing debris flows over recent fire scarred areas, causing power outages, downing trees and causing numerous traffic collisions.

December 31, 2005

Widespread flooding affected the county during the severe winter storm. Approximately 2 to 4 inches of rain fell in less than a 24 hour period, causing urban and small stream flooding. The most severe flooding occurred in San Leandro, Alameda, Oakland and Berkeley. Much of the damage was done to Public Property, mainly City and County facilities. An Oakland man was killed falling down his stairs during a storm related power outage. The flooding continued into the first few days of January 2006..

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
