Episodes
An area of low pressure passed by to the west with another area of low pressure developing near the Chesapeake Bay. This resulted in southeasterly winds to overrun colder air near the surface and a prolonged wintry mix/freezing rain event across the Allegheny Mountains where temperatures were just below freezing. Ice accumulations totaled two to four tenths of an inch. Sleet and snow accumulations totaled upwards of 2 as well. Winds also gusted to 50 mph during the event. This led to numerous accidents, downed trees and power lines which resulted in isolated power outages.
A powerful storm and cold front resulting in strong damaging winds across the area. Peak winds maxed out at 58 mph at Grantsville 5 W at 10:14 EST 3/26.
With a strong pressure gradient across the region (due to a deepening low pressure system over the Great Lakes), deep low-level mixing, and jet dynamics, high winds were experienced across the region.||Wind gusts of 45-50 mph were measured across the region for sites below 2,000 ft. For sites in the ridges, 50-60 mph wind gusts were experienced. Isolated areas reported power lines and trees down.
Strong low pressure lifted from the central Plains on the morning of the 23rd into the western Great Lakes by the 24th. A cold front then rushed across the region during the late morning/early afternoon hours of the 24th. Some rain showers accompanied the front, but the main story was the prolonged period of damaging wind gusts that followed the frontal passage. A very tight pressure gradient, 3 hour pressure rises on the order of 7-8 mb/hr, and deep mixing of up to 700 mb allowed for the efficient downward transport of strong wind aloft. The result was an extended period of 40-60 MPH wind gusts across the region. Several reports of peak gusts of 60 MPH or greater were received, ||The highest recorded gust was 74 MPH at a mesonet sensor east of Canaan Heights in Tucker County, WV. A number of peak wind gusts in excess of 60 MPH were observed as well. There were widespread reports of downed trees, power lines, and structural damage across the entire region, with some examples noted in the county entries. Thankfully, no injuries were reported from wind effects.||Power outages were widespread as well. Garrett County, MD had around 2600 Potomac Edison customers out at one point. Full restoration took multiple days due to the extent of damage and the initially unsafe working conditions due to the ongoing wind.
Winds gusted from 40 to 50 MPH with localized gusts over 60 MPH behind a strong cold front moving across the Upper Ohio Valley. Trees and power lines were reported down across portions of western Pennsylvania across the ridges into Garrett county, Maryland. The highest recorded wind gusts were 62 MPH at Marion Center in Indiana county, 59 MPH near Accident in Garrett county, 55 MPH at Wheeling, WV, and 55 MPH at Pittsburgh International Airport.

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.
What Causes Power Outages?
- Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
- Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
- Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.
What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?
- Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
- Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
- Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
- Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
