Thunderstorm Wind. The Mail Tribune newspaper and the police scanner indicated that numerous trees were knocked down in the Medford area. Some fell into power lines, causing multiple power outages. Other fell into vehicles and homes. Lightning also was the suspected cause of at least one structure fire.

A strong squall line developed over the coastal waters this day and moved onshore. Squall lines are unusual enough over the Oregon waters, but this one moved over the coastal range and brought severe winds and hail to the west side interior valleys...which is very unusual. Many trees were uprooted or broken, and a number of major roads were closed by fallen trees. 75,000 homes lost power due to this storm.

Lightning. A strong thunderstorm with frequent lightning caused structural damage...power outages...local urban flooding and one injury. A McDonald's employee was injured when lightning struck the restaurant while he was unloading the dishwasher. Full recovery was expected. A manufactured home was partially burned by a fire caused by a lightning strike. Several intersections in Medford and Central Point were flooding by heavy rain. More than 14,000 customers lost power at some point during the storm. All but 891 of those customers had power restored within two hours.
